Mission Statement

The Northwest Side Housing Center (NWSHC) is a community-based, non-profit organization that engages, educates and empowers the community to improve housing for all. We accomplish our mission through housing counseling, financial education, community organizing, outreach, advocacy and supportive services.

Description

Programs:

Housing Counseling: Whether you are a current homeowner or hoping to become one soon, housing counseling can help answer a lot of questions. As a certified HUD Housing Counseling organization, NWSHC provides free housing counseling on the following topics: First Time Home Purchase, Post Purchase, Foreclosure Prevention, Reverse Mortgages, Condo Ownership and Being a Landlord. If you are behind on your mortgage payments or fear you may be soon, please call the NWSHC for foreclosure prevention assistance.

Financial Education: Small group educational workshops are offered on a variety of topics, all aimed at providing northwest side residents with the tools and resources to get ahead financially and reach their goals.

Staying Put Senior Leadership: This group of older adults meets regularly to find ways to help seniors "stay put" in their community on the northwest side of Chicago. The group’s current campaign is focused on a volunteer-run transportation program for seniors living on the northwest side.

Housing Committee: This organized group of community residents meet regularly to discuss housing issues, develop strategies, engage those in power and win solutions. We do this through meetings with elected officials and corporate executives, media opportunities and other public events that build leadership and promote local solutions. Current issues include foreclosure prevention, vacant housing and getting additional resources to support housing on the northwest side.

Montclare Steering Committee: This organized tenants group at the Montclare Senior Living Facility work to improve the living situation at the building and hold management accountable to tenants.

Parent and Youth Empowerment: Public schools are the heart of the northwest side. Our education organizing is designed to empower parents to work together to strengthen schools for their kids.
