The Alzheimer's Association, Central New York Chapter is seeking volunteers to facilitate a monthly support group in the Onondaga County community. An Alzheimer's Association support group is an open gathering of people with common problems, needs and interests who come together to share their feelings, thought and experiences in a combined effort to better cope with and manage the shared problems of dementia in a safe environment. The support group facilitator allows the group process to take its course, allowing the group members to benefit from each other's wisdom. Volunteers are provided initial and ongoing training by Alzheimer's Association, as well as materials and reference information on the disease and chapter resources. Support Group Facilitators Support Group Facilitators create a safe, open environment where people share their feelings, thoughts and experiences in a combined effort to better cope with and manage the shared problems of dementia. Key Activities: Facilitate groups of caregivers or people living with dementia to provide social and educational support helping group members provide emotional support to one another. Present pertinent Association materials and information to group members and assure a positive experience for attendees. Connect people with additional Association services and volunteer opportunities by proactively making referrals to Alzheimer's Association programs & free 24/7 Helpline. Qualifications: Strong listening and effective communication skills with demonstrated ability to be empathic and separate personal needs from group needs. Ability to redirect and facilitate discussion as well as fulfill the Facilitator duties and responsibilities as described in onboarding. Ability to create and maintain a safe environment where participants’ thoughts and feelings are valued and group members are treated with fairness, equity and respect. Passionate about the Alzheimer’s Association mission with personal or professional experience with dementia preferred. Must be age 21 to apply. Background checks are required. Commitment Expected: Support Group Facilitators commit to a 1-year term delivering a monthly group. All program volunteers participate in initial training and ongoing education and must comply with Alzheimer’s Association volunteer policies and procedures. Terms are renewable upon successful completion of annual goal-setting conversation with your staff partner. Be recognized as a leader and resource for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Virtual Opportunity
This is not a virtual opportunity- locations vary Community Educators Alzheimer's Association Community Educators are volunteer public speakers who provide Alzheimer's Association education programs to community audiences. Key Activities: Collaborate with local Association staff to expand programs by securing community partners, scheduling presentations, delivering the programs, and managing technology needs. Serve as presenter for chapter-scheduled education programs and conferences. Connect people with additional Association services and volunteer opportunities by proactively making referrals to Alzheimer's Association programs & free 24/7 Helpline. Qualifications: Demonstrated success with health education using excellent communication, virtual presentation and adult education skills. Excellent technology skills and comfort delivering programs independently. For Virtual Programs- A Community Educator will be paired with either a staff member or Program Tech Support volunteer to assist with delivering virtual programs & moderating Q&A, if needed. Ability to network, and collaborate with staff, volunteers, and community partners. Passionate about the Alzheimer’s Association mission with personal or professional experience with dementia preferred. Must be age 21 to apply. Background checks are required. Commitment Expected: Community Educators commit to delivering a target of 12 presentations annually. All program volunteers participate in initial training and ongoing education and must comply with Alzheimer’s Association volunteer policies and procedures.
