Fix-It Crew Volunteer Are you handy? The Forest History Center could use your help! With 170 acres of land, miles of trails, a museum, visitor center, and a 1900s logging camp complete with eight buildings, there’s always something to do! Apply today and lend a hand as a Fix-It Crew Volunteer. Experience is not required, but would be helpful. Service Summary: Members of the Fix-It Crew will get a prioritized list of specific tasks to be completed from the Site Manager or Maintenance Division at the beginning of each day. Service will not include the use of heavy machinery. A Fix-It Crew task lists may include things like: Raking Clearing brush Planting trees Putting up signs for special events Setting up and taking down tables and chairs Painting Repairing broken items like benches Time Commitment: 2-5 hours per day, 1-2 days per week Wednesdays - Fridays Start Date: 4/26/2023 - 9/2/2023 This is an outdoor opportunity Green Thumb Volunteers Should Be: Willing to follow directions and complete assigned tasks Friendly and courteous Able to make all visitors feel welcome - answer questions in a pleasant manner Able to handle multiple tasks if needed Independent after training Willing to get dirty, wet, hot, and encounter wildlife (like insects) Able to speak and read, and write in English Willing to sit/stand/travel outside for 2-5 hours at a time Able to bend, crouch, kneel, reach, push, and pull Able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 20lbs Able to achieve acceptable results on reference checks and a criminal background check (at no cost to you) Willing to learn how to register for and sign in/out of volunteer shifts on a computerized system Accessibility Information: Please view accessibility information about the Forest History Center in the link below. Volunteers will be given a tour of the grounds and buildings and provided with gloves, eye protection and any other personal protective equipment (PPE) required. Lindbergh Trail Scout Hike through history as a Lindbergh Trail Scout! These volunteers walk the 1-2 miles of trail on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule. Don’t want to scout alone? Bring fido! Leashed dogs are allowed on trails and grounds, but are not allowed in any of the public buildings. Service Summary: Trails wind 1-2 miles around the historic house and through the state park. After each scouting mission, volunteers report the current conditions of the trail to site staff (washouts, fallen trees, etc.). Trail maintenance is not a part of this volunteer opportunity. Time Commitment: Trail Scouts are needed for one scouting hike per week throughout the year. This is an outdoor opportunity. Trail Scout Volunteers Should Be : Able to walk 1 - 2 miles of trails on our property and in the state park Willing to learn how to navigate using a basic trail map Enjoy the outdoors Comfortable in warm, wet, buggy, and dusty conditions where the potential to receive insect bites/stings is present Punctual and dependable - able to commit to an agreed upon schedule Attentive to detail Strong communicators Display friendly and respectful behavior with guests Able to achieve acceptable results on reference checks and a criminal background check (at no cost to you) Willing to learn how to register for and sign in/out of volunteer shifts on a computerized system Accessibility Information: Please view accessibility information about the Lindbergh House in the link below. Have you ever shirked your chores and played games instead? Rediscover this universal experience through the eyes of the Lindbergh family. Volunteers serve as greeters - welcoming visitors and helping with navigation. Along the way, they share our 19th century outdoor laundry station. They also invite visitors to join in on some childhood mischief - like playing marbles and graces. Sound like fun? Apply today! Service Summary: In this outdoor opportunity, volunteers serve as greeters and guides. Volunteers are expected to make visitors feel welcome, answer questions about the site, and provide navigation assistance. These volunteers are responsible for facilitating a safe and fun experience for visitors - especially during demonstrations. Volunteers help guests understand the skills and time required to do laundry in Lindbergh’s childhood. At the demonstration station, volunteers and visitors (usually family groups) wash laundry and hang the items up to dry using a wash and rinse basin, scrub board, wringer, and clothes line. Volunteers also show visitors how to play two games that were popular during Lindbergh’s childhood - marbles and grace. Volunteers are expected to demonstrate and participate in game play as needed. Time Commitment: On call for the fall 2024 and regular schedule to be determined starting in the spring 2025.
