ROOTS is a young adult emergency shelter that provides up to 45 guests per night, between the ages of 18-25, with a safe place to sleep, warm meals and other essential services. Volunteers are needed to help facilitate shelter tasks but most importantly provide social support and build meaningful relationships with the folks who stay with us. You must be at least 18 years of age to volunteer with us. In-shelter Morning Shift Details (6:45am-8:30am Sunday-Friday; 7:45am-9:30am Saturday): Morning volunteers socialize with guests and build community while working with staff and other volunteers as a team to ensure the emotional and physical safety of the shelter space. Volunteers will help hand out hygiene supplies, assist with laundry, retrieve supplies from guest cubbies, clean up the shelter, enforce program rules, and engage with guests. Morning volunteers build meaningful connections with their community and help our guests start off each day on a positive note while also ensuring our shelter runs smoothly and efficiently. To ensure the safety of all guests, volunteers, and staff, we require all volunteers to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination and to wear face masks throughout the duration of their shift. Volunteers are free to bring in their own face masks or other PPE, and we can provide gloves and disposable face masks on-site. The wellbeing of our volunteers is of the utmost importance, and we only ask you to commit to volunteering if you are safely able to do so. Upon arriving to each shift, your Volunteer Supervisor or other staff will ask you questions listed on the ROOTS COVID-19 screening guide and will take your temperature. Staff and guests are screened in the same way upon entering the space. We appreciate your understanding in this process. In-shelter Evening Shift (7pm-11pm, any day of the week ): ROOTS evening volunteers socialize with guests and build community while also working with staff and other volunteers to ensure the emotional and physical safety of the shelter space. From 7pm-8:30pm volunteers will disinfect all shelter beds, deep clean the shelter space, and prepare the space for guests. When shelter opens at 9:00pm, evening volunteers serve pre-made meals, hand out hygiene supplies and bedding, sign guests in and out of restrooms, and supervise guest activities such as computer time and smoke breaks. Most importantly, evening volunteers spend meaningful time with guests chatting over dinner, playing board games, and watching TV together. Evening volunteers help to ensure our shelter runs smoothly and efficiently while also providing guests with a sense of safety and stability during their time here. ROOTS is a young adults emergency shelter serving individuals between the ages of 18-25. We service up to 45 guests per night with a safe place to sleep, warm meals and other essential services. We need volunteers to provide social support and build meaningful relationships with the folks who stay with us. Additionally, our volunteers help facilitate and maintain the shelter space through various tasks. We welcome all unique bodies and value inclusivity and diversity amongst all people in the shelter space, including our volunteers. You must be at least 18 years of age to volunteer with us. In-shelter Evening+ Shift (7pm-1:00am): ROOTS evening+ volunteers work to ensure the emotional stability and physical safety of individuals in the shelter space while also socializing with guests and building community. From 7pm-8:30pm, prior to the shelter opening, evening+ volunteers work as part of a volunteer team to disinfect all shelter beds, deep clean the shelter space, and prepare the space for guests. When shelter opens at 9:00pm, evening+ volunteers will help serve pre-made meals, hand out hygiene supplies and bedding, sign guests in and out of restrooms, and supervise guest activities such as computer time and smoke breaks. At 10:30, after lights out, evening+ volunteers perform overnight tasks such as assisting in walk-arounds of the room every 10 minutes, being available for guests who require emergency assistance, and completing guest laundry. Shelter staff will be available at all times to support volunteers throughout the evening. Evening+ volunteers are highly committed members of ROOTS, and we value this commitment to ensure that the shelter runs smoothly and efficiently at night. For the safety of all guests, volunteers, and staff, we require all volunteers to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination and to wear face masks throughout the duration of their shift. In-shelter Morning+ Shift (5:00am-8:30am): Morning+ Volunteers will be in shelter each day from 5am-8:30am. Between 5am and 7am, Morning+ volunteers will do a walk-around of the shelter space every 10 minutes to monitor guest safety needs. During this time, Morning+ volunteers will also sign guests in and out of restrooms and assist with guest laundry. From 7am-8:30am the Morning+ and Morning Volunteers will hand out hygiene supplies, assist with laundry, retrieve supplies from guest cubbies, and clean up the shelter. Morning+ Volunteers will have staff's support at all times during each shift. This role is crucial in expanding our overnight coverage to the morning hours so that we can best support our guests throughout their entire time in shelter. We value the extended commitment of Morning+ Volunteers and appreciate volunteers who ensure that the shelter runs smoothly and efficiently throughout the morning. For the safety of all guests, volunteers, and staff, we require all volunteers to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination and to wear face masks throughout the duration of their shift.
