Are you studying social work or mental health services? Help support homeless shelter residents! BOSS is an Alameda County nonprofit organization that works to end to mass homelessness, mass incarceration, and community violence. BOSS serves over 6,000 individuals and families per year, helping them overcome crises and achieve stable, healthy, independent living in the community. We are looking for volunteers to help provide trauma-informed care to shelter residents - homeless individuals experiencing multiple forms of trauma (homelessness, generational poverty, family separation, domestic violence, community violence, incarceration, untreated mental illness, and other challenges) - to help them build life coping skills and move into permanent housing. We need help with both one-on-one assistance to residents, and organizing peer support groups and therapeutic activities. LOCATION: Ursula Sherman Village, 711 Harrison Street, Berkeley. HOURS: Mondays and Wednesdays, 1-4 pm.

HELP ORGANIZE RESIDENT ACTIVITIES at BOSS' homeless shelter in West Berkeley! We are looking for volunteers to lead or organize many types of activities - whatever most interests you or aligns with your skills: Life skills: goal-setting, budgeting, time management, etc. Self care: meditation, yoga, time/stress management, etc. Health: tending to physical/mental health, fitness, nutrition, etc. Computer literacy: basic computer skills, internet searching, using specific applications, etc. Art: painting, drawing, writing/poetry, music, etc. Other: Do you have ideas for an activity that could be useful or healing? Let us know! Building Opportunities for Self-Sufficiency (BOSS) is an East Bay nonprofit organization that is dedicated to fighting against mass homelessness, mass incarceration, and community violence. Volunteers would work at our largest homeless shelter, located in West Berkeley, called Ursula Sherman Village (USV). USV provides shelter, meals & amenities, and on-site services to up to 98 people a night - both single adults and families with children. HOURS: Flexible! USV is a 24/7 program. Reach out and we can figure out what will work best! REQUIREMENTS: Completion of volunteer paperwork; TB test. We are looking for someone to assist our Marketing & Communications Manager with marketing activities, including: Writing blog posts for the website Creating social media posts (@bossbayarea on FB, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, Tik Tok, YouTube) Researching issues relevant to BOSS' work for creating content Contacting program staff to collect program & client stories for content Assisting with community outreach and tabling events Othre marketing/communications tasks as assigned TIMES ARE FLEXIBLE: The work is primarily remote, plus some regular in-person office time, occasionally visiting programs, and asissting with community events. The BOSS Board of Directors governs the award-winning work of Building Opportunities for Self-Sufficiency (BOSS), a Bay Area nonprofit that serves homeless and low-income families and individuals in Alameda County. While day-to-day operations are led by BOSS Chief Operating Officer, Board Members provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about BOSS’s mission and who has a track record of board leadership. RESPONSIBILITIES of Board Members: Leadership, governance & oversight: Board members advise the CEO as he implements BOSS’s strategic plan; review outcomes and metrics to help BOSS evaluate its impact; review agenda and supporting materials prior to Board and committee meetings; approve the annual budget and audit reports; ensure that the agency meets all legal and fiduciary responsibilities; help evaluate and support the CEO; assist with ensuring a diverse and well trained Board; participate in working committees; and represent BOSS in the community. Fundraising: Board Members will consider BOSS a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. BOSS expects to have 100 percent of Board Members make an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity. Meetings and Terms. The full Board meets quarterly, usually on a Monday at 6PM at the BOSS administrative office or virtually. Committees meet monthly or as needed. Terms are two years, with approximately half the Broad elected each year. QUALIFICATIONS of ideal candidates: Extensive experience with executive leadership accomplishments in public, private or nonprofit sectors (experience currently sought in real estate, health/human services, or law enforcement) A commitment to and understanding of the communities BOSS serves BOSS values diversity and seeks Black Indigenous Persons of Color (BIPOC) Lived experience is a plus (justice system involvement, homelessness, poverty) Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals; Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of BOSS’s beneficiaries Service on BOSS’s Board of Directors is voluntary and without remuneration.
