The McHenry County Historical Society and Museum seeks special event volunteers to help set up and break down and work shifts at our Annual Heritage Fair (2nd Sunday in July) and Annual Cider Fest (1st Sunday in October) and other special events/programs through out the year. Volunteers are needed for the following areas: Pre-event tent set up on the Friday afternoon before the events, early morning set up on the day of the events, staffing various stations during the events, and event breakdown the afternoon of the events. Ideal for high school or college students, NHS members, or Scouts looking for volunteer hours

Volunteers can pick which days to work. This position is perfect for NHS high school or college students or retired people. Volunteers do not need to work all of these days. Dress is business casual. The primary duties for this position are to greet visitors and take admission. Those interested can work all or any days, Tuesday-Friday from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm o (No holidays). When visitor traffic is slow, volunteers can bring their laptops, read a book, work on a project or homework, or work on museum projects.

This position is perfect for NHS high school or college students or retired people. Dress is business casual. The primary duties for this position are to greet visitors and take admission. Position Title: Saturday Admission Desk Volunteer Responsibilities: Open and close the museum (turn on lights and display TVs) during Saturday hours. Greet and orient the visitors. After training, share knowledge of the museum exhibits, Harmony School, and Gannon Cabin. Daily cash and credit card handling of museum store and admissions fees. Time Commitment: Shifts are available June - October Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The shift schedule is flexible. Volunteers can pick which Saturdays to work. Perfect fit for high school or college students or retired persons. Skills and Recommended Proficiencies: Prior cash handling experience. Customer service background ideal. The McHenry County Historical Society in Union, Illinois, seeks a qualified and motivated Research Center Volunteer to begin working on a comprehensive inventory and digitization of our library and archive materials. The materials held in the Research Center consist of paper-based documents including but not limited to books, photographs, maps, newspapers, periodicals, select business and organizational records, genealogy files, and media including video, slide, record, and other audio/visual formats. This is an excellent opportunity to work with local history! Working with the Exhibits Curator and Research Librarian, the Research Center Volunteer will be inventorying, handling, and moving archive materials, cataloging and supplementing the information in the collections database (PastPerfect), ensuring proper archival storage, and photographing them. A background in library sciences or an interest in learning research library skills is preferred but not required. Volunteers will be trained on how to use PastPerfect. Flexible volunteer shifts. Minimum 4 hours a week. Any days, Monday - Friday 9 am - 4 pm General Requirements Must be able to lift 10-20 lbs. Attention to detail. Descriptive writing skills. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
