VITAS is looking to match talented volunteers with elders near the end of life, who have a tale to tell. Life Story volunteers capture a patient’s meaningful moments and can develop a "digital or web-based biography" featuring the patient recalling his or her life stories. VITAS Volunteer orientation is provided free of charge to help you learn many skills required to be an outstanding life story volunteer. Volunteers will also receive training in "life story/review" interview techniques and to improve their technical and creative skills. Time and dates are ongoing and flexible. Volunteer to Make a Difference in the Lives of Others - Irvine, CA

VITAS Healthcare(r) is looking for volunteers who are able to share their time with hospice patients living at home, in the hospital or in long term care facilities. Hospice volunteers give their time to terminally ill patients and their caregivers during a critical time. In orientation classes they are trained in listening skills, family dynamics and the right words to say to patients and their loved ones at the end of life. Visits made by our volunteers not only help each patient, but the families are truly touched as well. The shortest conversation can have the largest impact. VITAS volunteers provide relief care for caregivers, offer companionship for the patient, run errands and help in other meaningful ways. This is a great opportunity for you to give back to the community. By taking a small amount of time out of your busy week you can make the biggest difference in another’s life. Mission Statement

VITAS Healthcare recognizes the importance of a strong and innovative program. Volunteers are an integral part of the hospice program, allowing VITAS to continue personalizing, enhancing and expanding services offered to patients and families. By exemplifying the VITAS Values, volunteers serve as patient and family advocates and are proactive in meeting the needs of patients and families. VITAS integrates volunteers into the hospice team by actively recruiting, training, supporting, and creatively utilizing volunteers to meet patient and family needs. Volunteers and their contributions are respected and valued.

Description

Volunteers are the heart of VITAS, providing friendly, non-medical direct patient and family care, such as socialization, companionship, outings, playing music, singing, life reviews, light massage, caregiver relief or bereavement assistance to family and friends. We have special trainings and shadowing opportunities so that you are well equipped to begin your patient care visit in advance.

For those interested in volunteering in an administrative role, we have a place for you too! Non-patient support roles include office assistance via data inputting, filing and making packets or check in calls to patients and caregivers. (Enlist a friend and you come into the office together!) If you're a seamstress, making Memory Bears and other items for patients is welcomed. We are always open to new ideas too! So, just give us a call and we can figure out a way to meet your volunteer goals.

COMPASIONATE!!EXCELLENT STAFF!!I can not thank the Vitas staff enough...tears well up in my eyes as I think of the kindness shown to myself and my family. What a beautiful sense of peace they all provide.The admin nurse Judi, the social worker Lindsay, the day/night nurses...all filled with great understanding...what a GIFT they are!! Thank you, Renee
