The Arizona Democratic Party must continue on the path of progress and responsible government. The following core of values is rooted in our Democratic heritage. EDUCATION · Public education is the single most important investment we can make for the future of Arizona. · We believe family, school, community and state share responsibility for providing a safe working and learning environment in a high quality public education system. · We support equitable public school financing to raise the quality of education. WORKERS RIGHTS · The Democratic Party is the party of Arizona's working people. We believe that fair employment practices, equitable wages, safe, clean and healthy workplaces are critical to strong economic growth and personal advancement. · Workers' rights need to be protected and enhanced. We reassert our fundamental belief in the collective bargaining process as a means of serving the best interests of both employees and employers. · We support an increase in minimum wage. HEALTH CARE · A healthy Arizona benefits us all. Healthcare must be accessible, adequate, and affordable for everyone living in Arizona. · A comprehensive health care system must include a Patient's Bill of Rights, including the right to sue HMO's. · We support a mental health system that provides access to appropriate treatment for mental, behavioral, developmental disabilities and substance abuse. ENVIRONMENT · We believe that by preserving our environment we are preserving our quality of life. We support serious and effective measures to protect our natural resources. · We recognize the interdependence of ecosystems and community economics and believe that all communities have a financial and moral obligation to use land and resources in ways, which do not harm the environment. CIVIL RIGHTS · Full Protection and equal opportunity for all under the law remains a bedrock value of the Democratic Party. · Democrats will continue to lead the fight to ensure that no individual suffers discrimination or depravation of rights based on gender, language, national origin, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation, or race; this includes respecting all cultures including tribal sovereignty. · We support affirmative action, equality for women, aggressive prosecution of hate crimes and full enforcement of the Americans with Disabilities Act. FAMILY VALUES & RESPONSIBILITIES · Our success as a state depends on the daily assumption of personal responsibility; for the religious faiths we follow, the values we instill in our children, and the pride we take in ourselves and in our work. · In order to strengthen families; Arizona Democrats support passage of legislation that provides for affordable and effective health insurance, education and childcare. · We believe that the needs of family and children must be fully considered in all government policies. REPRODUCTIVE CHOICE · No government, no politician, and no bureaucrat should interfere in an individual's private and personal decisions regarding reproductive choice. · Women and men should have access to information, resources, and medically accurate counseling regarding all personal choices. · We support continued efforts in the area of sex education and family planning, which have been proven to decrease unwanted pregnancies. INTEGRETY OF GOVERNMENT · Arizona Democrats support comprehensive ethics and campaign finance reforms to restrict undue influence and special interest control of the democratic process. · Public officials, both elected and appointed, must adhere to the highest ethical standards. ECONOMIC AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT · We believe Arizona must continue to attract and foster both new and traditional industries while encouraging growth throughout our state. · We believe that technological progress is important for economic growth and that it expands new opportunities for everyone. · We will strive to provide a skilled and educated work force, solid infrastructure and a quality of life that attracts and creates good new jobs to provide a higher standard of living for all Arizonans. The free market, regulated in the public interest, is the best engine of general prosperity. RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERSHIP · We support the constitutional right to bear arms. · We support efforts to increase the education of the safe handling and responsible ownership of firearms. · We support background checks and safety devices for all firearms sold by licensed dealers, along with strong enforcement of existing gun laws.
