POSITION SUMMARY: Join the cooking team & assist staff with cooking healthy and nutritious meals for elementary, middle and high school-aged students participating in afterschool programming at the Lussier Community Education Center. Volunteers prepare meals for students on Mondays and Fridays during the academic year. HOURS: 3-6 hours/week (time dependent on number of shifts per week) Mondays and/or Fridays 3:30 PM - 6:30 PM DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Following a pre-made meal plan, prepare and serve the dinner meal to 50-80 students. Some foods will have been prepared during the morning volunteer shift. (i.e. potatoes used in mashed potatoes will be washed and peeled; frozen meats will be thawed.) Following the meal, store leftovers, and clean kitchen. Students will bring leftover food and dishes to the kitchen window and will clean off tables before storing. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Experience preparing meals for large numbers of people. Ability to work collaboratively with people of all ages and from diverse backgrounds, and with minimal supervision from LCEC staff. Mature attitude, creativity & resourcefulness. Understanding and appreciation of socio-economically, ethnically and culturally diverse populations. POSITION SUMMARY: Join the Food Pantry Team & prepare our pantry for shoppers. In this role, volunteers sort the food donations that are delivered to the LCEC each Tuesday and Friday. HOURS: 2-4 hours/week, (time dependent on number of shifts per week) Tuesdays 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM and/or Fridays 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Set up donation acceptance space with tables. Meet the donation pick-up volunteer team outside the LCEC at 2:00 PM to help unload the donations using wheeled carts. As donations come inside, weigh the product, enter into database, and sort into categories on tables. Sort food: Sort dry items onto categorized shelves in Pantry or Grab-and-Go refrigerator. Sort bread and bakery items into bags of assorted kinds and close with twist ties. Sort produce into same category bins. Place produce that needs to be kept cool in fridge. Repackage food items that came from salad bar into plastic shell containers. Label with the name, allergens, and expiration date. After all food has been sorted, spray down bins and tables with sanitizer. Put tables away. POSITION SUMMARY: Join the Food Pantry Team & pick up the food donations from our partner Whole Foods. In this role, volunteer is asked to use own vehicle to transport donations. HOURS: 2-4 hours/week, (time dependent on number of shifts per week) Tuesdays 12:45 PM - 2:00 PM and/or Fridays 12:45PM - 2:00 PM DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Drive to LCEC to pick up the collapsible milk crates that the food will be placed in. Drive to Whole Foods on University Ave (3313 University Ave, Madison, WI 53705). Park next to the compost silo/unloading ramp. (Off of Hill Street). Head up the ramp to the back door and ring the doorbell. A staff member will let you in. Then, staff members will begin pushing carts of food out. You and other volunteers will push the food carts to your car, unload the food into the milk crates, and place milk crates in your car. Drive back to LCEC to unload. Donations are weighed and placed on tables in LCEC Commons. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Work requires lifting and loading vehicles. Weight of bins can be more or less, dependent on how volunteers pack them. Understanding and appreciation of socio-economically, ethnically, and culturally diverse populations. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Volunteers will support our vision for youth programs at LCEC to prepare our youth to be college and career ready. Volunteers who thrive in this role focus on building a relationship with youth by getting to know them as individuals, building trust, and being someone youth can talk to about their day. HOURS: 1.75 hours/week Shift Options: Mondays-Fridays 4:15 PM - 6:00 PM DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Help engage youth in any daily activities. Help staff with any set up or cleanup for activities. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Experience building relationships and working with youth of color. Mature attitude, creativity & resourcefulness. Volunteers will support our vision for youth programs at LCEC to prepare our youth to be socially and emotionally intelligent and physically safe. Volunteers who thrive in this role focus on building a relationship with youth by getting to know them as individuals, building trust, and being someone youth can talk to about their day. Volunteers are encouraged to share their skills and talents and are welcome (and encouraged!) to take a leadership role in the planning and implementation of programming. HOURS: 3 hours/week Shift Options: Mondays-Fridays 3:30 PM - 6:30 PM. Volunteers could join anywhere between 1 day a week to 5 days a week. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Activities will include: Homework and academic support Participating with kids in partnership programs (theater, dance, art, health and wellness, mindfulness, etc.) Joining the group for field trips when possible Helping to prepare snacks and meals Many other fun activities!
