Transforming the lives of youth by providing the support, stability, and skills they need to flourish in the community and in their families.

Description

In the communities we serve, young people experience poverty and 3 times the adversity of their peers. Beyond the instability and insecurity that makes it difficult to meet their most basic needs, these youth experience social, emotional, and cognitive obstacles that bar them from living the joyful, purposeful life that every young person deserves.

We are changing that. We are building a future where every young person can live their life with joy and purpose, confident in their ability to decide their own path.

To make it happen, we provide 1:1 mentoring with a dedicated adult and a proven program for personal growth, including tailored goal setting and connection to vital resources, all within a supportive peer group. In doing so, we're transforming the lives of youth by providing the support, stability, and skills they and their families need to flourish.

Our holistic, research-based program is proven to generate remarkable outcomes for the youth we serve - from improved mental health and personal wellness to academic success and greater high school graduation rates. We give them the tools and resources to not only achieve safe, healthy lives, but find fulfilling career paths, seize new opportunities, and enhance their relationships with their families, peers, and all those around them.

When our youth experience the support and personal development that our program offers, they feel unstoppable - and that spirit extends beyond the self to impact their family, community, and the world around them.

THIS IS A VERY GOOD PROGRAM FOR VOLUNTEERS TO BRANCH OUT. CHANGE A LIFE OR JUST TO MAKE A PERSON SMILE.

It was a time in my life when I decided that donating money to needy organizations was not enough for me. I had made a promise to myself that I would be a "Role Model" to my children, without them knowing about my commitment. I started mentoring in April of 2007 with New Pathways for Youth. I have mentored 3 youths, and still stay in touch with them and their families regularly. From the moment I enrolled to be a mentor, I knew that this is exactly what I had been searching for in my life. I know that by being a mentor, I have made a difference in the lives of my youth's and their families. I am now involved with the Leadership Team and I'm able to see firsthand the results that are possible, when a community of people come together to support a young person at risk. Mentoring creates new possibilities for everyone. I am proud to say that my relationships with my children are better than I could have ever imagined, and I owe it all to this amazing Community. Thank You NPFY.

I would highly recommend this organization to friends and collegues. One of the most life changing decisions I could have ever made in my life is to mentor the life of a young girl. This program is designed to allow the youth to realize the changes they need to make in their lives but also allowing them to make those changes when they feel they are ready. This organization not only is a community of mentors and youth but you become a family. The respect and love everyone has for eachother is one I have never encountered in my life up untill this moment. I have mentored for 4 months now and plan to continue mentoring in this program and I highly recommend this organization. You wont regret it!

I have volunteered with PYAR for over 2 years now. I have never met a group of people so dedicated to this amazing cause. I am so honored to be able to actively participate and mentor a young man through life and I always say that I get more out of this experience. When all the mentors get together it is overwhelming to see how a community can come together for the youth in this city. There is such a demand for mentoring and the rewards are endless. Lee

I would highly recommend Phoenix Youth at Risk (PYAR) to anyone and everyone. My first experience volunteering and mentoring with PYAR was back in 2008. I can honestly say it changed my life in the most positive ways. What this program does for teenagers is amazing. They learn wonderful life tools, a sense of community, a higher self-esteem, and much more. And the great part is, so do you as the adult volunteering. I use the tools I learned every day in my relationships. And I think they are so useful and efficient that I have implemented many of the ideas into the company that my husband and I run. If you want to really make a difference in a young person’s life, and also your own, there is no better place to do so than PYAR. I have gone through the program twice and also joined a continuing program that they offer. I am still in contact with both of the girls I mentored. I am so proud of them and also proud to be a part of PYAR.

I am currently serving as a mentor for the second time. I became involved with Phoenix Youth at Risk in March, 2010 and knew from the start that I had found a second family. Throughout the past year, I have found that being a mentor has helped me grow in ways I never realized were possible. It has even helped me achieve closer relationships with my own children. The youth in this program have come to us, determined to make major lifestyle changes, and that determination cannot help but encourage the adults who serve as their mentors to reach toward loftier goals in our own lives. The changes that I saw in the youth from the beginning to the end of the first program I volunteered for were remarkable and inspiring and I have already witnessed growth and greatness from the youth in the current program. Whatever impact I have had on the youth of this program has returned to me tenfold and I am a better person for knowing them and being a part of their lives.

It's the best gift you can give yourself. After being assured that I was not too old at age 78, I agreed to a 10 month commitment to be a Mentor for Youth at Risk. I not only discovered that I was not too old; but, I rediscovered MY youth; and my 10 month commitment is now in its fourth year. Having successfully mentored two youth, I am still committed to the program and am now in the role of being a Coach to the Mentors. But, I must admit that my role as a Mentor for the youth was by far the most rewarding. I have a continuing relationship, built on mutual trust and unconditional love, with both of my "Mentees". My first youth not only turned his life around, but is now taking an active role in the program as a Grad Youth supporting the Leadership Team. Knowing that I can contribute to making that kind of difference in a youth's life, I will continue to be involved in this "most rewarding thing I have ever done" program, in whatever role I can best serve.

I believe in the mission of PYAR. They truly are transforming the lives of poverty level children and at risk teens. The best part is how much the volunteer receives in turn for the giving of their time. The skills learned are ones that the volunteer will continue to put into practice in the personal and professional lives long after they are complete in their mentoring role.
