Position Title: Volunteer Physics Phenomena Facilitator Department: Museum Education Reports To: Turbine Hall Educators Location: Physics Lab at OMSI POSITION SUMMARY: Volunteers in the OMSI Physics Lab support museum guests' exploration of a variety of physics phenomena, from light and sound waves to magnets and hair-raising experiences with electricity! Volunteers should have enthusiasm for experimentation and passion for presenting hands-on learning activities in a safe manner to further engage museum guests in the amazing interactions that happen in the world. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: ● Ask open-ended questions, co-investigate, and use other facilitation techniques to help promote inquiry and encourage museum guests to engage with physics phenomena ● Present various interactive physics demonstrations to an audience of diverse backgrounds and ages (demonstration examples include the dancing water bowl, vacuum chamber, Van de Graaf generator, and more; training provided) ● Assist in maintaining lab exhibits and activities, including refilling activity supplies and tidying exhibits ● Maintain a safe, secure, and inviting environment for museum guests and staff ● Assist staff with other duties as needed KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: ● Excited about physics and committed to sharing accurate scientific information ● Eager to facilitate guest-centered experiences ● Able and interested in listening and communicating with people of diverse backgrounds and age levels ● Able to maintain a calm, pleasant, and cheerful demeanor in a variety of atmospheres ● Self-directed and willing to take initiative ● Dependable, punctual, communicative, and able to commit to a regular schedule ● Willing to follow OMSI rules and procedures SCHEDULE AND SUPPORT: ● Commitment to a 4 hour shift on a weekly or biweekly schedule (either morning or afternoon). ● Attend the following trainings or classes provided by OMSI: ○ Volunteer Orientation & Emergency Protocols ○ Mandatory Reporter Training ○ Hazardous Communication Training VOLUNTEER BENEFITS: ● Training opportunities and a lifelong learning experience ● Admission for the volunteer to the museum exhibits and attractions based on availability ● An OMSI Family Membership upon completion of 50 hours of volunteer service ● Discounts in the OMSI Science Store and onsite eateries ● The opportunity to connect with new people and learn more about OMSI

Position Title: Science Pub Greeter Department: Events Reports To: Events Manager Location: Museum on Water Ave POSITION SUMMARY: Science Pub Greeters volunteers support adult education by partnering with OMSI’s Events team to support guests and presenters at Science Pubs in Portland. Volunteers will be able to enjoy OMSI’s Science Pubs from an insider’s perspective! Most Science Pubs take place in the evening and individuals are encouraged to commit to volunteering for at least four hours each month with Science Pubs. Flexibility with event plans and enthusiasm for education are a must! Must be 18 or older. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Greet visitors and welcome them to the Science Pub Staff OMSI table by assisting guests with event donations ($5 suggested cover charge), selling pint glasses and answering questions Distribute and collect evaluation forms Pass microphone to guests during Q&A Assist with set-up as needed (may include setting out flyers, pint glasses, etc.) KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Interest in a wide variety of science and technology topics. Experience handling cash and credit card transactions. Strong communication and customer service skills. Self-directed and willing to ask for help when needed. Able to listen and communicate with people of diverse backgrounds and ages. Dependable and punctual. Willing to follow OMSI rules and procedures. Position Title: OMSI After Dark Education Facilitator Department: Events Reports To: Public Programs Coordinator Location: OMSI Museum - Water Ave Position Summary: OMSI After Dark Education Facilitators connect with life-long learners at OMSI After Dark, an evening event just for adults, by engaging guests with educational demos and providing customer service at the museum. Because these events have a variety of themes, duties may vary considerably. Facilitators are also called upon to assist with demos at similarly styled Community Science Nights. Flexibility with event plans and enthusiasm for education are a must. Volunteers will be able to enjoy OMSI After Dark from an insider's perspective! Must be 21 or older. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Implement new activities and demonstrations with guests, ranging from arts and crafts to physics and engineering, depending on the needs of the event. Assist with set-up and clean-up procedures for activities and demos. Interact with visitors to help them explore and learn from OMSI demonstrations, exhibits and lab activities. Assist in maintaining a safe and secure environment for visitors and staff. Give clear directions and provide information about activities happening throughout the museum. Assist Public Programs Coordinator with research and development of educational demonstrations as needed. Knowledge and Skills: Strong communication and customer service skills. Skillful in facilitating hands-on interactions and translating scientific information accurately and age-appropriately. Able to maintain a calm, pleasant, and cheerful demeanor in a noisy and crowded environment. Able to listen and communicate effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and ages. Dependable and punctual. Self-directed and willing to take initiative. Willing to follow OMSI rules and procedures. Schedule and Support: OMSI After Dark events are typically on the last Wednesday from 5:30pm to 10:00 pm each month, but days may vary depending on the topic. Due to the training involved, volunteers should plan to be at a minimum of 4-6 events over the course of 1 year. Position Summary: Submarine Queuers coordinate with the USS Blueback and Guest Services teams to assist visitors as they begin their tour experience of the USS Blueback submarine. In this particular period, answering questions and stating OMSI protocols as related to COVID-19 will be an important additional aspect of the volunteer opportunity. Detailed training related to these protocols will be provided to volunteers. E SSENTIAL D UTIES AND R ESPONSIBILITIES : Greet and welcome all submarine tour guests prior to their tour to share any pertinent information. Utilize a 2-way radio to communicate with submarine staff regarding the number of tour guests and arrival times. Coordinate with tour guides and guest services representatives to determine the number of tickets sold and people for each tour. Lead tour participants outside to the top of the boat ramp. Give clear and accurate information about other museum attractions and events, as well as an introduction to the history and story of the Blueback. When necessary, encourage parties to adhere to OMSI’s safety protocols, including social distancing and wearing protective face coverings. Q UALIFICATIONS : Interest in supporting the USS Blueback or submarine science education. Strong communication and customer service skills. Comfortable speaking to 1-6 tour guests without the use of a microphone. Able to listen to and communicate with people of diverse backgrounds, education levels, and ages. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Able to maintain a calm and cheerful demeanor in a variety of atmospheres. Dependable and punctual. Must present a professional appearance. Willing to follow OMSI rules and procedures. Schedule and Support: Shift Times: 10:00 to 1:30 pm or 1:30 to 5:00 pm Minimum number of hours: 8 hours per month, 4 hours per shift Minimum age: 18 years Attend the following trainings or classes provided by OMSI: Volunteer Orientation Emergency Protocols COVID-19 Safety training Customer Service training Role Specific training Volunteer Benefits: Training opportunities and a lifelong learning experience. Position Summary: The Planetarium Usher guides guests as they experience OMSI’s Kendall Planetarium shows, featuring a domed display of space and live commentary. Volunteers who have some experience with public speaking and customer service, as well as a passion for supporting space science, will enjoy this position. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Greet and welcome all planetarium guests prior to their show utilizing a microphone to share any pertinent information. Facilitate admittance into the planetarium utilizing timed tickets to allow limited seating inside. When necessary, encourage parties to adhere to OMSI’s safety protocols, including social distancing and wearing protective face coverings. During the show, monitor the audience for any safety concerns and escort guests out if they need to leave early. Assist the Space Science Educator as needed prior to, during, and after the show. Knowledge and Skills: Interest in supporting astronomy or space science education. Strong communication and customer service skills. Comfortable speaking to a large group with the use of a microphone. Able to listen to and communicate with people of diverse backgrounds, education levels, and ages. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Able to maintain a calm and cheerful demeanor in a variety of atmospheres. Dependable and punctual. Must present a professional appearance. Willing to follow OMSI rules and procedures.
