Drivers age 55+ with a good driving record are needed to drive a van serving most areas of San Diego County with special needs in the northern and central parts of San Diego County including Poway, Rancho Santa Fe, Encinitas, Escondido, Valley Center and Fallbrook. Most assignments are for 3-4 morning hours one day per week. Grocery routes pick up unsold groceries at stores and deliver to food pantries. Food harvest routes pick up loaded boxes from residential harvests and deliver to similar locations--sometimes more than one delivery point. Drivers may be accompanied by other non-driving volunteers to help with loading and unloading. Drivers need not be able to lift filled boxes of fruit or groceries, but that would be helpful. Prospective drivers attend a coaching session with a driver instructor -- a one-hour classroom session and one hour behind the wheel experience every two years. Drivers also consent to DMV notification to Senior Gleaners of any driving infractions. This is a very rewarding assignment with food distributors delighted to receive the surplus food.

STAY ACTIVE by working under trees loaded with fruit. MAKE NEW FRIENDS. HELP FEED hungry residents. We need volunteers over 55 years of age to help pick and transport fruit in most areas of San Diego County. Most crews pick on Tuesday mornings, but some form mini-crews of family and friends who set their own schedule. There is no minimum hourly requirement for volunteering, but most volunteers serve for 3-4 hours per week. Some volunteers haul up to 300 pounds of food in their own vehicles traveling 10-20 miles to food distribution agencies. Other volunteers drive a Gleaner-owned van (or assist as sorters and loaders) to move unsold groceries from supermarkets to warehouses. Senior Gleaners donates most of the fruit and food to the San Diego Food Bank, Feeding San Diego, food pantries, churches and similar organizations. If by chance you don't get a response from us within a few days, please email info@seniorgleanerssdco.org or gm@seniorgleanerssdco.org.

Virtual Opportunity
Can you lead Senior Gleaners in 2025? This San Diego County non-profit is expanding service areas and developing a strategic plan. To accomplish these projects, we are seeking TWO people to fill the roles of board members at large to lead our organization. We are looking for candidates NOW to begin serving in January 2025. The positions are vital to the continued operation and success of our organization and will be supported by our board of directors. Ideal candidates for these positions should have a passion for our mission and leadership experience in organization management or board membership, but these qualifications are not mandatory. Candidates need not have direct gleaning experience. The volunteer members of the Board of Senior Gleaners set policy, lead in fund raising, exercise fiduciary responsibility, and have hiring authority. The board approves the annual budget, policies and plans to fulfill the organization’s mission. The board consults with and oversees the work of the part-time administrative assistant. Board members may be of any age, should reflect the communities that we serve, and bring personal skill-sets that enhance the oversight and management of the organization. Members attend quarterly meetings in person or virtually. Between meetings, they work on committee assignments. Members are expected to make an annual financial contribution. Approved by a vote of the board, officers serve for a term of two years and may serve an additional two years in the same position.

Organization Information
Mission Statement
Our mission is to feed the hungry through agencies in San Diego that qualify their recipients. We GLEAN excess food from private yards, area fields, and grocery stores. Our mission is also to alleviate problems aggravated by lack of nutrition. We do not buy any food. All money raised through grants and donations goes toward our overhead of transporting the food and driving vans to pick up and distribute the food. We also provide meaningful activity for seniors.
Description
Senior Gleaners has been feeding the hungry in San Diego since 1992. Using the volunteer skills of seniors (age 55 and over), we GLEAN excess food from numerous sources including backyards, farms and grocery stores. This food is then distributed to food-giving agencies throughtout the county. We need volunteers ages 55 and older to help with all aspects of our work. Board members are not required to be 55 years old.
