To provide children and teens with special needs, a unique, creative drama experience enabling personal growth while breaking down stereotypes related to disabilities within the community at large. Ultimate Goal Our ultimate goal is to create specific opportunities for children and teens, with and without special needs, to work together. Mainstreaming is encouraged whenever students have developed the appropriate social and artistic skills necessary to succeed. Based on this premise, SGT’s goals include developing creative abilities, building friendships and providing disability awareness by breaking down stereotypes about disabilities.
Description
Brief Overview of Programs
Musical Theatre Program: A 25 week program run during the school year, which culminates in a fully mounted musical theatre production, complete with sets, costumes and props for ages 10-21.
Creative Drama Program: Designed for children with special needs that are 7-9 years old, this program introduces children to exploring and understanding the structure of dramatic stories by using their body, voice, mind and imagination and focuses on social skills and pragmatic language.
Early Childhood Program: An outstanding creative literacy drama opportunity for a young child with special needs. Through creative drama techniques, children reenact a story in their own words conveying their own meanings and feelings for ages 3-6 years.
Peer Mentor Program: This unique mentoring program consists of matching able Peer Mentors, 8-18, one-on-one with students in the program. The mentors volunteer their time to attend all classes and rehearsals with their "theatre buddy" and are onstage with them during each performance.
