Mission Statement

Bissel Gardens is a collaborative effort to provide the community with a garden serving many purposes -- bringing people together, beautifying the neighborhood, creating safe outdoor space, offering community gardening space, growing food for donation to emergency food programs, and organizing educational programs

Description

Bissel Gardens, a five-block area in the Wakefield section of the Bronx, had been abandoned in previous years, but in 1994 was reclaimed by residents for community gardening activities. The property includes a children's garden, an area for environmental and educational programs, community gardening plots, and an area designated for growing food to support local hunger-relief organizations. Bissel is also the future home of a farmers' market. Last year, the community garden donated nearly 1,500 pounds of fresh produce to city hunger-relief organizations including God's Love We Deliver, Gateway Council, and other local soup kitchens.
