Support refugees and immigrants as an online ESL literacy tutor with ACC-VA, the African Community Center of Virginia! ACC-VA helps newcomers rebuild their lives in Northern Virginia as a local branch of the Ethiopian Community Development Council (ECDC), a national refugee resettlement agency. We are looking for volunteers that are excited to help students start from the VERY beginning and master the essential building blocks of the English language, empowering them to continue learning and eventually become proficient. Our clients rely on our free English classes to start new lives and gain confidence in the US; volunteers like you play a crucial role in helping us provide this support! No experience? No problem- all volunteers receive training & teaching resources. Who are we looking for? Fluent in English, excellent speaking and writing skills Available to tutor 1 hour a week Have computer with internet connectivity & webcam to teach on Zoom, Google Meet etc. Eager to support students from diverse cultural, religious, educational, and socio-economic backgrounds Cross-cultural sensitivity, patience & adaptability Tutoring and/or teaching experience, ESL experience/TESOL certification a plus! Knowledge of Dari, Pashto, Ukrainian & Spanish a plus! What will tutors do? ACC-VA helps newcomers rebuild their lives in Northern Virginia as a local branch of the Ethiopian Community Development Council (ECDC), a national refugee resettlement agency. We offer Literacy, Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced ESL classes and are looking for volunteers that are excited to help students navigate their new communities, start new lives, and gain confidence in the US; volunteers like you play a crucial role in helping us provide this support! No experience? No problem- all volunteers receive detailed teaching resources and guides; Teaching Assistants are paired with more experienced Lead Instructors. Who are we looking for? Fluent in English, excellent speaking and writing skills Available for classes 2-4 hours a week for 12 weeks Have computer with internet connectivity & webcam to teach on Zoom Eager to support students from diverse cultural, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds Cross-cultural sensitivity, patience & adaptability Tutoring and/or teaching experience, ESL experience/TESOL certification a plus! Knowledge of Dari, Pashto, Ukrainian & Spanish a plus! What will volunteers do? Teach or assist with class at least 2 hours a week, 1 day a week Lesson plan and create PowerPoints Take attendance, communicate with students about class, assign and review homework Attending pre-semester and mid-semester training sessions with ESL Coordinator Coordinate with co-teachers, complete class log notes OPEN POSITIONS: Literacy class teaching assistant: Provide remedial support to students that are still learning the alphabet and how to read basic words. Beginner class teaching assistant: Work with students that can read basic words, know the alphabet and numbers, and can use and write basic English phrases. Intermediate class teaching assistant: Teach students that can hold conversations about most basic topics, read moderately complex texts, and write short paragraphs. Advanced class teaching assistant: Support students that are fluent speakers and want to hone advanced grammar concepts, improve their writing (including professional writing), and refine their speaking.
