Mission Statement

The Little Sisters of the Assumption Family Health Service, founded in 1958, is a nonprofit, community-based organization that works with the people of East Harlem to address the dimensions of family health. Our home-based and center-based programs are designed to empower those who are most vulnerable and who have least access to the basic necessities of life. Our work is based upon a profound belief in the strength of families, even when they seem to have overwhelming problems. We work flexibly with families for as long as necessary, and never refuse or interrupt work with a family for lack of government funding or other reimbursements.

Description

There are 6 main program areas at LSAFHS:

1) Family Support Services and Food Pantry: help families meet their immediate need for food and address the longer-term issues of living in poverty. Our Advocates educate families about their rights and empower them to access needed services and resources.
2) Environmental Health Services: helps reduce missed school and work days; as well as emergency room and hospital visits for those with asthma. Our home-visiting community health workers identify and actively assist families to modify housing conditions and household living habits in order to improve indoor air quality and overall health and well-being.
3) K- 5 Enrichment inspires children in grades k- 5 to improve reading and math skills, with socio-emotional learning goals and parent involvement integrated throughout the program. The program offers homework help, after-school tutoring, summer enrichment, and arts programs for school-aged children.
4) Mental Health Services supports women of childbearing age and their families located throughout New York City, providing the community with free, bilingual and holistic trauma-informed care services.
5)Parent and Child Development Program: fosters healthy child development from zero to three years of age.
6) The Sharing Place thrift store offers high quality, low priced clothing, shoes and housewares to the community.
