Description
Clean Bread and Cheese Creek is grassroots organization whose mission is to restore the natural beauty and improve the environmental quality of the Historic Bread and Cheese Creek through education, and by mobilizing volunteers for monitoring, restoration and advocacy.
Since 2009, our organization has grown from a small group of friends to include hundreds of volunteers with no funding from outside groups. While our restoration activities originally focused on the 4.71-mile-long Bread and Cheese Creek, we have expanded to include surrounding areas. We also assist other environmentally-conscious volunteer organizations with their projects. Another goal of our organization is education; we speak at schools, colleges, and businesses about environmental sustainability and stewardship, as well as to inform the community about legislative matters.
Clean Bread and Cheese Creek organizes a several cleanup a year from March through November focusing on various streams, parks and public lands. In six years, 3,606 volunteers have removed 528 shopping carts, 429 tires, 98 bicycles, and over 150 tons of trash, while at the same time recycling over half of the materials collected from our community’s streams, parks and public lands.
We have also grown beyond only cleaning our namesake stream of Bread and Cheese Creek to include regularly scheduled cleanups at the Peninsula Expressway, Bear Creek, Lynch Cove Run, Merritt Park, Stansbury Park, Bread and Butter Creek, the Methodist Meeting House Monument, Battle Acre Monument Park, North Point Battlefield State Park, and more.
Clean Bread and Cheese Creek also regularly speaks at schools, businesses and community organizations about environmental stewardship within the community and small steps home and business owners can take to become greener and to help save the Chesapeake Bay.
Community members are an integral part of our effort since they make up our volunteer base for the entire organization. These volunteers provide the labor, tools, transportation and other resources needed to be successful in our efforts to restore historic Bread and Cheese Creek. Additionally, in many locations it is necessary access the creek though private property and uses these locations as staging areas from which to remove the trash and debris. In other words, without community participation out organization would not exist.
Clean Bread and Cheese Creek will continue making improvements in our urban stream by assisting citizens to learn about environmental issues and to take personal responsibility for the preservation and restoration of the stream.
Opportunities to participate are available for all ability levels and ages as we seek instill a sense of environmental stewardship and community pride. To find our more, subscribe to our electronic newsletter.
