Do you like working with young children? The Sugar Museum seeks volunteer tour guides for our Education Program. Students visit and learn, and as a docent, you will guide them through the museum using a question and answer style of tour, and providing a welcoming environment. The Sugar Museum’s Education Program teaches students about sugar and plantation life on Maui, and meets curriculum benchmarks for Hawaii second grade Social Studies. You will join a pool of other docents who are called upon monthly. Shifts are weekdays 9:00 - 11:30 a.m., September through May, while school is in session. It's easy and fun. We provide a script and you will observe a live school visit to get started. If this sounds like a fantastic opportunity for you to teach youngsters about Maui history in a lively field trip setting, contact us!

Do you have a friendly smile and Aloha? Do you like sharing what you know about Maui? Are you a high school student or Scout who needs community service hours? We have opportunities for you! The Sugar Museum is a 1902 plantation home in a beautiful little patch of green in Puunene, Maui, across from the historic HC&S mill. Here, people learn all about sugar history and plantation life. Working at the front desk and gift shop consists of greeting visitors, ringing up sales on a POS system, stocking shelves, pricing merchandise, keeping the museum neat and tidy, and general all-around help. You'll spend a little bit of time at both desks, so there is plenty of variety. It's easy and fun! Currently schedule is Monday-Thursday, 10-12 or 12-2. The schedule is subject to change, so please inquire in advance. Learn more at our website. Mahalo for supporting the Sugar Museum.

Join our Stitching Squad; sew beanbags, and support Museum Education! The Sugar Museum needs lots of empty beanbag shells for our visiting students. You can help by sewing for our interactive learning activities. Why join us? The beanbags you sew will be used in hands-on educational games and activities, and make learning a positive and memorable experience for the youngsters. This is a great group activity for students, Scouts, clubs and even families. Learn more about our Education Program at our website. There you will also find a pattern and instructions. Organization Information
Mission Statement
The Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum is a 501 c3 non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and presenting the history and heritage of the sugar industry and the multi-ethnic cultural heritage which it engendered.
Description
The story of sugar on Maui is told at the Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum. We are the main source for information on Maui's sugar history, and its multiethnic cultural heritage. We are located across from the historic 1902 Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company mill (now closed) in what was once the thriving plantation town of Pu'unene. The museum is housed in one of the few historic buildings remaining from that era and contains exhibits about one of the most significant and influential periods in the Islands’ history. It presents information about the sugar industry, depicts sugar’s influence on the development of Maui’s water resources, and describes plantation community life and the immigrants who came here from all over the world to work in the fields and mills. Outdoor exhibits feature large harvesting and mill equipment.
