Mission Statement

To build the next generation of conservation leaders and inspire liflong stewardship of our environment and communities by engaging young people in hands-on service to the land.

Description

The program is a partnership between the Student Conservation Association (SCA) and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Management (DEM). SCA is America's largest and oldest provider of national and community conservation service opportunities, outdoor education and career training for youth. DEM is the Commonwealth agency responsible for the management of the state's forests and parks and has always had a keen interest in the education of the public to conservation issues. Based in the Berkshire mountains, the Massachusetts Forests and Parks AmeriCorps Program (MFPA) is a residential community of emerging leaders who devote 5 or 10 months to full-time conservation service. Members carry out service by mentoring local youth through in-school and after-school environmental education programs and carrying out significant natural resource conservation service projects.
