Volunteers for this program will work on a team to build wheelchair ramps for seniors with mobility challenges. Volunteers can: help assemble ramps on-site at various locations around Calhoun and Kalamazoo counties and/or... help pre-build ramp parts at our Kalamazoo facility (Monday mornings). On-site ramp builds generally happen on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. However, dates and locations of ramps are subject to change due to weather and other factors. Flexibility is appreciated. Sites will be supervised by experienced Senior Services staff. We offer gas reimbursement for more distant ramp sites. Volunteers should have some familiarity with and ability to safely use basic power tools and hand tools. More advanced carpentry knowledge is useful, but not required. Physical activities include standing for short or prolonged periods of time, carrying up to 50 lbs, bending, reaching, and stooping. Limited accommodations can be made when necessary. Volunteers are encouraged to bring basic tools (drill, driver, hammer, tape measure, etc.) if they have them. Minimum age is 18. Ramp builds for group volunteer projects can be scheduled in advance.
