Volunteer Position Title: Content Acquisition Specialist Background: Archaeological Legacy Institute (ALI) is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization based in Eugene, Oregon. Our streaming-media Web site and chief project, The Archaeology Channel (www.archaeologychannel.org; TAC), launched 24 years ago, has become one of the world’s most popular Web sites relating to archaeology and the human cultural heritage. A closely-related spinoff of TAC is The Archaeology Channel International Film Festival, produced each spring in downtown Eugene, Oregon. In 2010, ALI launched its first cable TV programming distributed over a growing nationwide network of stations. Our most popular program is the Audio News from Archaeologica, our weekly radio-style show, produced continuously since 2001, summarizing the top archaeology and cultural heritage research stories from around the world and distributed on TAC and by podcast to a loyal audience in the hundreds of thousands. Most recently, ALI launched our subscription video-on-demand platform, Heritage Broadcasting Service (heritagetac.org), with a growing subscriber base. ALI has numerous opportunities for unlimited growth as an Internet media and public outreach organization and needs to expand its volunteer work force in order to take advantage of these opportunities. Some of our volunteers may become our employees, depending upon their productivity and effectiveness. Hourly Commitment: 5-10 hours per week or by negotiation Compensation: This is a volunteer position. Job Purpose: To assist our staff in acquiring video content for our subscription video-on-demand platform, Heritage Broadcasting Service (heritagetac.org). Description: Our mission involves the delivery of Internet programming as part of our mission to tell the human story. A Content Acquisition Specialist is responsible for helping to identify video content for Heritage Broadcasting Service as well as assisting in the communication process with prospective content providers. This is a chance to help accelerate the progress of a dynamic and growing nonprofit enterprise. You will be joining an innovative team on a mission to create a unique media organization with worldwide influence. Your help here will have a direct impact on ALI's productivity and ability to pursue its public mission. And the experience you gain will be directly transferable to other technical positions you may seek in the future. Key Responsibilities: Researching film titles, gathering prospects’ contact information, making contact with prospective content partners, and making records of those contacts.. Requirements: We prefer people who have interest in film relating to cultural heritage, but this position does not require specialized knowledge. Communication skills are important. We will train you in the day-to-day tasks so that you can take them on yourself with confidence. Can be local or remote. Background: Archaeological Legacy Institute (ALI) is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization based in Eugene. Our streaming-media Web site, The Archaeology Channel (TAC: www.archaeologychannel.org), has become the world’s most popular archaeology Web site, with annual traffic of about 7 million page views. For several years now, much of our social media communication has been done by volunteers. Continuing growth of our enterprise requires continuity among our dedicated staff of media specialists focusing on internet social media. We seek several volunteers to form the nucleus of such a staff. Hourly Commitment: at least 1 hour per week, more if possible. Job Purpose: To maintain and expand our on-line social media communications. Key Responsibilities: 1. Carry out the formulatiomn and uploading of social media files using existing equipment and methods, to maintain ALI’s current rate of expansion of TAC programming. 2. Explore ways to improve on currently used methods of social media communication through research into best practices of the streaming media industry. 3. Maintain close coordination with our Executive Director in person and via e-mail and telephone in the conduct of social media communication tasks. Qualifications: Experience with social media. Our streaming-media Web site, The Archaeology Channel (www.archaeologychannel.org; TAC), has become one of the world’s most popular Web sites relating to archaeology and the human cultural heritage, with annual traffic of nearly a million page views. ALI also produces The Archaeology Channel International Film Festival, an annual cultural event in downtown Eugene. We currently work out of a home office and are looking to move into commercial office space. ALI has numerous opportunities for unlimited growth as an Internet media and public outreach organization and needs to expand its volunteer work force in order to take advantage of these opportunities. Some of our volunteers may become our employees, depending upon their productivity and effectiveness. Hourly Commitment: 10 hours per week or by negotiation Compensation: This is a volunteer or internship position. Job Purpose: To create closed captioning files for selected films through the use of software designed for that purpose. Description: Our mission requires that we create programming for public benefit and consumption and that we distribute that programming for fund-raising purposes and audience generation. Our Closed Captioning Specialist will be responsible for viewing films selected for our Amazon Video Direct service and documenting the audio tracks in the closed captioning software to generate files that make the closed captioning subtitles for the films. This is a chance to help accelerate the progress of a dynamic and growing nonprofit enterprise. You will be joining an innovative team on a mission to create a unique media organization with worldwide influence. Your help here will have a direct impact on ALI's productivity and ability to pursue its public mission. The experience you gain will be directly transferable to other technical positions you may seek in the future. Key Responsibilities: Viewing films, generating closed captioning files for our Amazon video service. Requirements: We prefer people who have an interest in this kind of work and can appreciate the value of closed captioning for the hearing impaired and foreign-language speakers. We will train you in this task, so you don’t need prior experience with closed captioning. Must be local. Description: Productivity in our office is hindered because our Executive Director and our Administrative Assistants are continually called upon to handle routine office tasks such as filing, bill paying, bookkeeping, correspondence, and so forth while also trying to develop and manage programs and raise funds! We need more office help beyond our existing Office Manager. Our Office Assistant will help improve and maintain the office infrastructure to support the activities of the others who work here. This is a chance to help accelerate the progress of a dynamic and growing nonprofit enterprise. You will be joining a dynamic and innovative team on a mission to create a unique media organization with worldwide influence. Key Responsibilities: Filing, bill paying, bookkeeping, correspondence, answering the phone, scheduling, data management, research, and special assignments as needed. Requirements: We do prefer people who have interest and some experience in office management. The more experience in office work the better. A mature person looking to apply experience to make a difference and excited about our innovative programs would be ideal. Our Digital Media Specialists are responsible for manipulating audio and video content (most of it digital) that is delivered to the public through TAC and TAC Festival. Key Responsibilities: Video production, digital capture, editing, encoding, transcoding, uploading, data entry, and archiving of digital audio and video files and projects, and special assignments as needed.
