Volunteers are the HEART of Heartland Hospice! We are looking for more pet therapy teams to join our growing team of amazing volunteers! Therapy dogs and their handlers enrich the lives of our patients by providing companionship and providing meaningful activities through regular visits. Service hours are flexible and scheduled according to your availability and location. Volunteers and their four pawed companions have the power to bring the greatest gifts to our patients’ lives... a smile and reassurance that comes with knowing they are genuinely cared for! If you have a canine with a big heart who spreads joy wherever she/he goes, this is the opportunity for you! All dogs must be pet therapy certified.

Veteran Volunteers have the unique ability to support other Veterans who have a life limiting illness. Heartland Hospice Volunteers help to personalize, support and enhance the quality of life of those being visited. Volunteers bring the gift of friendship to our patients through regular visits, companionship by just being there with the patient or assisting with non-medical tasks. The support through listening, sharing experiences & stories, allowing for expression of feelings and offering words of comfort is a gift. We recognize that Veterans share a special bond. The goal of our Veterans Program is to match Veteran patients with a hospice trained Veteran who may have a similar military background.

Our number one goal at Heartland Hospice is to ensure no one dies alone. A hospice Vigil Volunteer is one of Heartland's most special and fulfilling opportunities. Vigil Volunteers sit bedside with a patient who is in their last hours of life. Support may involve providing respite to family (allowing them to step away and eat a meal/take a break) or simply being present...providing comfort and peace of mind to all that the patient is not alone. Our Vigil Volunteer program is more of an "on-call" opportunity; vigil support is based upon request of patient's family or caregiving team. Scheduling of vigil takes into consideration the volunteer's location, comfort level and availability. Individuals must be appropriately coping with any personal losses, have impeccable communication skills, sound judgment regarding issues of death and dying, and ability to work independently with indirect supervision. Characteristics that ProMedica is looking for in a Vigil Volunteer include: a positive outlook on life, flexibility, empathy, sensitivity to issues around death and dying, compassion, a willingness to help others and ability to work as a member of the hospice team.
