Did you know that more than 48 million adults in the United States can only read and write at a 3rd grade level? Literacy Source makes it possible for adults to gain the literacy skills they need to succeed in school, to find a job, to achieve life goals, and to create a better, more hopeful future. Our volunteer tutors offer individualized support to neurodiverse adults and/or adults with learning disabilities who want to improve their foundational reading, writing, and math skills, or to those want to get their GED. Tutoring pairs can also focus on computer skills (such as using email). Tutors will develop lesson plans focused on individual students' needs and own goals from beginner to intermediate level. We work with a diverse group of both native and non-native English speakers at our learning center in Lake City. Bilingualism and/or experience working with neurodiverse adults, immigrants, or refugees is a plus. Training and support will be provided. Did you know that 1 in 6 adults in Washington State lack the basic literacy skills needed to get a livable wage job? Help make a difference by volunteering with a diverse population of low-income adults working to improve their lives and become more self-sufficient. As a class assistant you will support an instructor in either an ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), citizenship, conversation, or computer class. Classes focus on skill levels (beginning to advanced) in reading, writing, speaking/listening, or specific topics, such as work skills, citizenship, GED prep. Our classes are small and student-focused serving immigrants and/or refugees and native English speakers. Bilingualism and/or experience working with adult immigrants and/or refugees is a plus. Join one of our informal, English Conversation Circles (ECC) at various Seattle Public Library (SPL) locations or online. These programs provide immigrants and refugees the opportunity to practice conversational English in an informal environment. Conversation Partners help lead fun, small-group discussions on various topics that volunteers help plan in advance and work with English for Speakers of Other Language (ESOL) adults of all skill levels. Develop cross-cultural friendships and learn new skills while making a difference in your community! Good verbal communication and interpersonal skills in a diverse environment are desired. ECC's are held in-person at the Literacy Source center, Beacon Hill, Delridge and Northgate branches, and online circles at the Literacy Source center and the Central branches of the SPL.
