Serve as Board of Trustees with LVA, Essex & Passaic Counties, NJ!

Flexible Schedule | Virtual Opportunity

Give the Gift of Literacy to adults seeking to learn how to read and write English. LVA is currently accepting applications from adult volunteers from the community to serve on our Board of Trustees. Board members are responsible for setting the Goals and Policies of the organization, developing the Annual Plan, approving and monitoring the Annual Budget, hiring and evaluating the Executive Director, and for overseeing the management of the organization. This adult literacy organization has been serving the Essex County and the Passaic County communities since the 1980s. It trains volunteer adults to tutor other adults in Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language. Our students realize remarkable personal achievements, like Andrea, named Literacy New Jersey's 2015 "Student of the Year;" Barry, an Army reservist who served in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and won the first-place prize for fiction writing in the 2016 New Jersey Association for Lifelong Learning Adult Learner Writing Contest; and Barry, Fernanda and Beralia, our other writing contest winners. Our efforts have been recognized by organizations like Literacy New Jersey, which named LVA, Essex & Passaic Counties the "Outstanding Affiliate" of 2015. Prior board experience would be beneficial but not required. Most important is your desire to help us share the gift of literacy with all adults seeking to acquire or improve their English language skills to attain their own personal, educational, and career goals. Become a literacy volunteer!

When you help an adult, you help her or his entire family. At Literacy Volunteers of America, Essex & Passaic Counties, we have a long list of U.S. citizens and immigrants, among them refugees and asylum seekers, waiting for help in learning to speak, understand, read, and write in English. But we need volunteers to teach them. Here's how you can help: Learn to teach ESOL and Basic Literacy with LVA. After training, you will be matched with a small group of students (three to five students) and tutor them for at least two hours each week via distance learning. Become a volunteer literacy tutor by registering for our 10-hour (five days of two hours each) virtual tutor training course and then teach students with distance learning so we can keep the tutoring going during COVID-19. LVA tutoring sessions will go back in-person once the COVID-19 threat dissipates and therefore this opportunity is only for local residents of Essex and Passaic Counties or others than can meet in-person in these counties. This is a great opportunity to get involved and help your community!
