Description
Geneva Lake Astrophysics and STEAM, GLAS Education, is a small nonprofit organization in Southeastern Wisconsin that is at the forefront of providing innovative and inclusive STEM experiences, with a strong emphasis on creating educational materials for diverse communities. Our mission is to foster a vibrant, multigenerational community engaged in astronomy and STEM education, with a particular focus on accessibility for individuals with disabilities and increasing the number of people from underrepresented communities who wish to enter the STEM workforce. By leveraging the principles of Universal Design for Learning and our extensive hands-on experience, we use astronomy as a foundation to instill the skills and mindset necessary for sustained interest and perseverance in STEM. Our efforts in accessibility for the Blind/Visually Impaired community have been recognized nationally and internationally, including receiving the prestigious Bolotin Award from the National Federation of the Blind for our contributions to advancing career opportunities for blind individuals.
GLAS Education actively engages communities through astronomy and STEM events at libraries, schools, and camps. Our McQuown Scholars program offers hands-on projects that not only contribute to environmental conservation but also provide valuable research and leadership experiences for students. They also have the ability to participate in our Dark Skies outreach and education efforts in the Geneva Lake area.
