Mission Statement
Since 2015, physician assistant students and licensed clinicians have traveled to Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, to provide medical care to the Poqomchi’, a Mayan-descendant community in remote villages. They treat around 500 patients annually, ranging from newborns to the elderly, during a week-long mission. The initiative includes sustainable projects like building a year-round multi-specialty clinic. Collaborations with local organizations such as AVIS and Mision Vida Nueva support these efforts. AVIS also offers scholarships to local students, while Mision Vida Nueva runs an orphanage, Casa Gloria, providing shelter and support for children in need.
Description
Our most recent project is supporting our partners in Guatemala in building a multi-specialty medical and surgical clinic in the Alta Verapaz region to support these patients throughout the year when volunteer groups are not present. The clinic will provide a more sustainable healthcare system for patient's whether they need basic primary care, obstetric care, surgery, or acute care. Existing hospitals in this area have very limited resources and struggle to care for the volume of patients that walk through their doors each day.
