Mission Statement

Central Washington Disability Resources Mission - Central Washington Disability Resources advances the empowerment, inclusion, and wellness of all persons with disabilities through advocacy, community education, peer mentoring, and skill development so that they may realize independence and full participation in all areas of life. THE INDEPENDENT LIVING PHILOSOPHY The philosophy of independent living holds principles that contrast the IL model with the traditional rehabilitation model. In the IL model, the society with barriers and the negative attitudes toward disabilities are the problems to be fixed, not the individuals with disabilities.

Description

CENTERS FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING

A CIL is a non-residential, not-for-profit, community-based agency that provides the core services of Independent Living. A CIL is more than just an organization. It embodies a movement with a philosophy rooted in principles similar to the civil rights and women’s movements. The Independent Living Movement developed in response to systems that were inaccessible and excluded people with disabilities.

Today, CWDR is working to grow and expand their reach into their 5 county area of Chelan, Douglas, Grant, Kittitas and Yakima Counties and in order to do that we are recruiting volunteers with and without disabilities to serve on standing committees and to apply for board positions.
