Mission Statement
Advancing research on substance use, promoting public education, and reducing stigma to improve health outcomes!
Description
At the HAPPY Lab, we are dedicated to understanding how drugs and alcohol affect the brain and behavior. Recreational substance use is widespread-over 80% of Americans aged 12+ report lifetime use of legal substances, and 50% have used illicit substances. However, only a small proportion develop problematic use. Our research focuses on understanding the biological factors that may protect some individuals from developing substance use disorders.
We are also passionate about public education. As a publicly funded research group, we aim to communicate new findings and provide resources on the effects of various drugs. We offer guidance on evaluating and controlling substance use and share information on evidence-based treatments and how to access help.
Lastly, we are committed to reducing the stigma surrounding drug and alcohol use disorders. This stigma prevents people from seeking treatment-less than 10% of those with a substance use disorder receive help-and undermines public health initiatives that are effective in reducing harm.
