Virtual Opportunity
Current/former teachers, Education majors in college or grad school, and/or those with TESOL/TEFL backgrounds, Join us at Casa San Jose as a volunteer lesson plan writer! If you like, you may also help with volunteer teaching! Casa San Jose is a non-profit serving the Latino community in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas and it offers adult English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to Spanish-speaking adults, 18+, in Allegheny and Beaver Counties in four evenings a week, 7:00 to 8:30pm. Classes are offered in East Liberty, Penn Hills, Mount Lebanon and Ambridge (in Beaver County). The volunteer team has taken on a curriculum writing project to enhance their learners' experience, however we could use some help in completing the lessons for all four levels in the program. Someone with experience writing lesson plans and a background in language teaching / language learning would be an ideal candidate! (We have folks with this experience, but just not quite enough of them :) Lesson writing can be done remotely and during our curriculum planning meetings which happen several times a year. If you'd also like to help with ESL teaching, you can do 1 to 2 nights per week in one of our locations that is closest to you. Casa San Jose offers three sessions a year: a Spring session from January to May, Summer session in June and July, and a Fall session from Sept. to November, with no classes in December. Stay with us for just one season, or stay as long as you like! While previous teaching / ESL experience is not required, it's always welcomed! You will be able to observe classes before deciding if you'd like to volunteer with us. You may choose to co-teach a class with another volunteer or teach on your own one to two nights a week. Knowledge of Spanish is also not required, but of course, it's welcomed! It's certainly helpful to know some basic Spanish (or Portuguese) when teaching the beginner level, but it's absolutely possible to teach it without. If you express interest in this opportunity, Trisha Powell, ESL Coordinator, will reach out to you to set up a brief one-on-one meeting on Zoom to learn more. Thank you for reading!
