Virtual LGBTQ+ Mentor

Acceptance from at least one adult can decrease the risk of LGBTQ youth attempting suicide by 40% (The Trevor Project). You can make a direct positive impact on the life of an LGBTQ+ young person. As a mentor, you join a young person one-on-one to support them through life’s challenges and joys. Match Support Specialist

Flexible Schedule | Virtual Opportunity

Role Overview Match Support Specialists are an integral part of Linked Mentoring mission to support and empower LGBTQ+ youth and families. The primary purpose of this volunteer position is to assist in the development of trusting, safe, mutually positive relationships between the mentor and mentee. Within this role, the Match Support Specialist will be expected to uphold documentation standards, ensure child safety and wellbeing, and provide resources and guidance to further match development. You will be a part of a team of Match Support Specialists, and work alongside the Director of Mentorship to provide consistent, thorough, and meaningful match support. Who you are Experienced: You have meaningful experience working with youth and/or families. Relationship Builder: You love meeting new people and building rapport with volunteers to create mutually beneficial and meaningful relationships. Developed Growth Mindset: You see opportunities to build something better and more impactful at every turn. You value giving and receiving feedback as means to build trusting relationships, improve the organization and grow personally. Effective Communicator: You value being thorough and transparent when communicating important information and documenting conversations. Commitment to Continuous Learning: Demonstrates a willingness to learn about best practices in mentoring, LGBTQ+ youth support, and program management, and applies new knowledge to the role. Passionate and Mission-Driven: You have a real drive to connect, empower and inspire LGBTQ+ youth. You want to create community, belonging and safety. What you’ll do (3-5 hours per month, estimated) Complete initial onboarding and training on Linked Mentoring policies/procedures and match support strategies Communicate regularly with the Director of Mentorship and/or Program Operations Manager on progress, goals, and logistics Support youth-adult match development through monthly virtual check-ins with mentors, mentees, and parents/caregivers to provide guidance, support, and resources as necessary Submit detailed match support notes after each check-in Other, as determined by individual occupying the spot To apply, please submit your resume and brief answers (about 3-5 sentences each) to the below prompts to Jake Sullivan, Director of Mentorship, at jake@linkedmentoring.org. Description

LGBTQ+ young people are disproportionately exposed to violence and marginalization based on homophobia, transphobia, queer criminalization, racism, ableism, capitalism, adultism, the patriarchy, and other systems of oppression. Many do not have any LGBTQ+ adults in their lives who are invested in their joy and growth. We are here to change that. We facilitate intergenerational mentoring relationships for LGBTQ+ young people that address the harm in their lives and celebrate them for who they are. Our programs are all-encompassing, reimagining mentorship to be individual, group, and peer. As a remote-first organization, we further reimagine mentoring by creating far-reaching access for LGBTQ+ young people across the country.
