Mission Statement

We Believe that World Change Starts with Educated Children. We envision a world in which all children can pursue a quality education that prepares them to lead fulfilled lives and make positive change -- in their families, communities and the world. Room to Read is creating a world free from illiteracy and gender inequality. We are achieving this goal by helping children in historically low-income communities develop literacy skills and a habit of reading, and by supporting girls as they build skills to succeed in school and negotiate key life decisions. We collaborate with governments and other partner organizations to deliver positive outcomes for children at scale.

Description

Room to Read is breaking the cycle of childhood illiteracy and poverty in a single generation. We know how to solve the illiteracy crisis. Room to Read's approach not only works for all children - it works at scale.

Our innovative Literacy Program results in some of the strongest positive learning outcomes in the sector and is the only global literacy organization that effectively combines these three core elements: effective literacy instruction, engaging, child-friendly libraries, and quality, local language children's books.

Our Girls' Education Program is one of the longest interventions of its kind, providing support from Grades 6 - 12 when girls are especially at risk of falling behind or dropping out of school entirely. The depth of our engagement allows girls to strengthen their life skills as they advance, fostering better long-term outcomes for girls to succeed in their education and lives after graduation. Girls receive a contextualized program based on need and grade level that consists of four main components: Life Skills Education, Individual Mentorship, Community Engagement, Material Support.
