Our newly established nonprofit seeks volunteers who can spread the word on social media about our free tutoring for people taking the citizenship test. The Citizenship Coalition provides free citizenship tutors, who work online with immigrants preparing for their USCIS interview. The interview is the final step in the naturalization process and involves an oral and written test. Our nonprofit organization launched in June. Since then we have drawn more than 70 volunteer tutors from around the country who are eager to help eligible immigrants gain U.S. citizenship, which offers a variety of legal protections and benefits. Each year approximately 9 million legal permanent residents are eligible to become U.S. citizens. But less than 10 percent undertake the naturalization process, which can be confusing and intimidating. The Citizenship Coalition works to increase the number of successful applications for citizenship by supporting immigrants with individualized help. We stand as allies to immigrants from all corners of the world who hope to make America their new home. Social Media Outreach Volunteers will work to increase signups for tutoring by circulating flyers and generally engaging with online communities to promote awareness of our organization. Ideally volunteers will have some experience with online marketing to minority communities. But volunteers with general social media expertise and language skills in addition to English are encouraged to sign up. Please fill out the signup form and/or reach out directly to the director with the contact below. Virtual Opportunity
We are a new organization seeking volunteer tutors to work with immigrants taking the U.S. citizenship test. All tutoring is done remotely. You can arrange tutoring sessions at mutually convenient times with your citizenship applicant. Training involves reading a tutor handbook and attending an orientation session led by a team member. Volunteers can get additional training and guidance on tutoring as needed. To apply, please sign up at this link: https://forms.gle/ZoYtXNnFCMuohUhy9 You don’t need prior experience with any kind of tutoring or any knowledge of the naturalization process. We will teach you everything you need to know and provide all the materials needed for tutoring. And you will have a volunteer coordinator available to answer any questions at any point. More than 90 percent of applicants pass the USCIS citizenship test. In most cases, immigrants facing the test need just a little review of the questions they will be asked and some encouragement. The USCIS test can be quite intimidating for many, and one of the most important aspects of tutoring is simply being a source of warmth and support for immigrants taking a major step in their lives. The time commitment is flexible. Tutoring engagements vary in terms of frequency and duration. But generally volunteer tutors will meet for one or two hours per week with their citizenship applicants, who tend to access tutoring in the weeks and months prior to their USCIS appointment. However, volunteers who want to be more active can do so by working with more than one person preparing for the test. Please indicate in the form how much you would like to volunteer, and a coordinator will work with you on a schedule. A coordinator will contact you once you submit a form to arrange an initial call. Our organization is in the early phase of launching. We are gathering and training a team of volunteers who can expect to be working with immigrants applying for citizenship in the near future. Virtual Opportunity
The Citizenship Coalition is a newly established nonprofit helping immigrants gain U.S. citizenship. We are seeking new board members who can drive fundraising so that we can transition from an all-volunteer startup to an organization with a small staff that can increase our impact. The Citizenship Coalition provides free individual tutoring to citizenship applicants preparing for their USCIS interview, which involves an oral and written test. The tutoring is done remotely using phones and computers. We strive to make preparing for the USCIS interview easy and convenient for citizenship applicants. Generally applicants participate in tutoring through video calls on their phone, while our tutors use computers allowing them to access instructional materials easily. Since launching in June 2024, we have recruited more than 70 volunteer tutors from across the country. More than 30 immigrants seeking citizenship nationwide have signed up for our free tutoring. We have established a small network of partner organizations in multiple states, who refer citizenship applicants to us. And we have a small online outreach program that we hope to grow. Our volunteer tutors have collectively delivered approximately 130 hours of citizenship tutoring. Most importantly, 14 of our beneficiaries have passed their USCIS citizenship test as of mid October, and more are set to do so before the end of 2024. In 2025, we hope to expand our impact by hiring a small staff and are seeking board members to help with fundraising. We hope to raise enough money initially to hire four full-time staffers, who would ensure that at least 375 citizenship applicants get free tutoring annually. Volunteer board members would help design and implement a fundraising strategy for this initial goal and develop long-term growth plans for the organization. The ideal candidate has fundraising experience, a passion for immigrant rights and an eagerness to help a startup nonprofit grow. If interested, please reach out directly to the director Mark Kukis: mkukis@citizenshipcoalition.org.
