Organizational Overview The School Mindfulness Project's (SMP) mission is to provide students and teachers in Philadelphia's underserved school communities with greater physical and emotional well-being, paving the way for compassionate classrooms and creating space for academic success. Through the SMPeaceful program, all students participate in baseline mindfulness education, and all staff are provided with introductory mindfulness training and classroom integration support to provide a lasting impact. Position Description SMP aims to enhance institutional culture and improve academic outcomes for K-12 students within the Philadelphia School District through the introduction of mindfulness and yoga practices at the school-wide level. Members of SMP’s Board of Directors will support the organization through the following activities: Ensuring compliance with nonprofit regulations Providing financial oversight and reviewing/approving the annual budget Working with staff to determine organizational priorities and goals Providing input and and strategic recommendations on current and potential programming Developing methods to evaluate programs and impact Increasing community awareness about programs, goals, and impact Garnering support for the organization’s programs and operations Identifying potential community partners and other resources to support and enhance SMP’s programs Board Meetings Board meetings are held virtually on a bimonthly basis on the 4th Thursday of the month from 12:00 P.M. until 1:30 P.M. Board Meeting dates will be shared with Board Members at the beginning of the fiscal year to ensure adequate time to plan ahead. New Board Members who join after the start of the fiscal year will also receive the dates for all Board Meetings through the end of the fiscal year. All Members are expected to attend every meeting, and if a Member has to miss a meeting, they are expected to provide advance notice to the Board Chair or Executive Director. Committee Participation Board Members are expected to serve as a Chairperson for at least one committee during their tenure. Committee meetings are held virtually on a bimonthly basis, and Board Members are expected to attend each of the six meetings during the fiscal year. If a Chairperson is unable to attend a committee meeting, then he/she should notify the Board Chair or Executive Director. Committee Chairs are also expected to report out on the goals, activities, and progress of the committee with respect to organization’s strategic plan during the bimonthly board meetings. SMP’s committees include the following: Executive Governance/Strategic Planning Finance Fundraising/Development/Marketing Human Resources Program Programs & Events Both program and fundraising events are held regularly throughout the fiscal year. Board Members are expected to attend fundraising and public engagement events and to observe at least one program session to support an understanding of the mission and work of the organization. Description
Our SMPeaceful program provides ALL students with a baseline mindfulness education and ALL staff with introductory mindfulness training and classroom integration support to provide a lasting impact. Utilizing a five-part educational curricula, a dedicated SMP Educator Team provides:
A 7-week Mindful Teacher immersion program to school staff A 14-week Mindful Classroom Community Training to students and teachers A yearlong classroom-based training, education, applied practice and integration support which ensures classroom and school-wide communities are adopting the practices as their own. Upon completion of the training program, schools may elect to provide students on-the-mat yoga classes. Our SMPeaceful program equips teachers and students with the tools, knowledge, skills, and materials to continue their own mindfulness practices and integrate mindfulness education into the classroom setting using daily lessons from The School Mindfulness Project’s curriculum.
