The mission of the Board on Aging and Long Term Care is to advocate for the interests of the state's long term care consumers, to inform those consumers of their rights, and to educate the public at large about health care systems and long term care.

Description

The Wisconsin Volunteer Ombudsman Program was established in 1994, to supplement and extend the advocacy services of the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program, focusing solely on residents living in skilled nursing facilities. The Volunteer Ombudsman Program operates in 36 counties throughout Wisconsin. Trained volunteers make unannounced weekly visits to a designated long term care facility, working to empower residents and their families to communicate concerns and complains by providing support and empowerment. The Volunteer Ombudsmen assist residents by being their voice and working hand-in-hand with the facility staff to resolve issues.

Requirements: a minimum 6-month commitment; pass a criminal background check, (paid by our agency); be free from conflict of interest; attend mandatory training; provide own transportation; make unannounced, weekly visits to assigned facility; complete and submit monthly reports; and enjoy spending time with residents in nursing homes.
