Mission Statement

We are building a community of mighty, courageous, and empathic individuals to rescue furniture from landfills and help refugees and low-income families and individuals. We work on the intersection of sustainability, community, and equity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment that thrives on reducing waste, empowering individuals, and uplifting communities. We envision a future where furniture waste is eliminated, repair skills are fostered for generations, and vulnerable households have access to quality furniture.

Description

At Furniture Repair Bank, we are reducing the climate impact of furniture waste by promoting the circular economy of repair and redesign. A pilot program of Zero Waste Washington, we opened our doors in June 2023 and quickly got to work!

We empower individuals and build a resilient community by teaching repair and refinishing skills to volunteers, talents that are less frequently passed down through the generations in our increasingly disposable economy. Our volunteers and donors learn that worn or broken furniture does not have to be destined for a landfill. Once restored to like-new condition, the items are gifted to community members in need, such as refugees, domestic violence survivors, and people emerging from homeless situations.
