The Neighborhood Stories Project is a storytelling initiative by the NYC Department of Records and Information Services (DORIS) with the mission of recording the memories of New York City residents through a series of oral history interviews. These interviews will be preserved in perpetuity at DORIS - connecting local history with the records of City government maintained in the collections of the Municipal Archives and Library. The interviews will reflect people’s unique experiences of life in New York City and will be available for researchers, teachers, students, activists, and residents interested in discovering the history of their city from the perspective of its community members. We are looking for volunteers to interview participants for the Neighborhood Stories Project. Volunteers will interview participants about their lives and communities in New York City. Once recorded, the interview is preserved in perpetuity at the Municipal Archives with the goal of documenting the personal histories of local residents and changes in their communities from a personal perspective. Interviewers should have access to a phone (including landline), computer, or the internet. Volunteers can also assist the project in recruiting other participants in their families and communities by spreading the word about the Neighborhood Stories project and sharing informational materials (which can be provided). Volunteers will primarily serve remotely but there are also opportunities to conduct in-person interviews at partner locations and participate in community outreach events as an ambassador for the project. Training will be provided. Responsibilities: Perform outreach to organizations, groups and individuals to engage them in the Neighborhood Stories project. Outreach to include; making phone calls, sending emails, attending virtual community engagement events, etc. Develop interview questions, guide participants through the interview process, and conduct interviews Manage technical aspects of recording the interviews. Maintain reports documenting outreach and interviews Perform other duties to support the Neighborhood Stories Project, as assigned Requirements: Candidates must possess strong written and verbal communication skills; Strong research and organizational skills are helpful; Volunteers must be able to work well with people of diverse backgrounds; Candidates must be Internet proficient; Proficiency with audio editing software would be helpful; Candidates must be comfortable learning new equipment and programs (e.g., audio recording equipment, online communications platforms such as Zoom, etc.); Bilingual abilities are a plus. Participants in the project are interviewed by a trained volunteer, who will ask them questions about their lives and communities in New York City. Once recorded, the interview is preserved in perpetuity at the Municipal Archives with the goal of documenting the personal histories of local residents and changes in their communities from a personal perspective. Participants should have access to a phone (including landline), computer, or the internet. Participants should also be willing to share their stories and experiences. Volunteers can also assist the project in recruiting other participants in their families and communities by spreading the word about the Neighborhood Stories project and sharing informational materials (which can be provided). About the Interview: Interviews last roughly an hour; The interview is conducted on the platform Zoom. However, you do not need to have an account or a computer to sit for this interview. If you don’t have access to a computer or the internet, you will be able to call in from your phone (including a landline) to join the interview. Before your interview, you will be required to sign a release form, so that the recording can be preserved in the Archives; The interview will cover topics related to your personal history, specifically your experiences living in your Neighborhood. While you do not need to have lived in a New York City neighborhood for a given duration of time, you do need to be a present or past resident of New York City. Increase your knowledge of New York City history, learn more about archival work and help a diverse public access the records and resources of NYC government by becoming a volunteer at the NYC Department of Records & Information Services. The NYC Department of Records and Information Services (DORIS) preserves and provides public access to historical and contemporary records and information about New York City government through the Municipal Archives and Library, with historical collections dating back to the 1600s. The world-class collections of the Municipal Archives include over 1.6 million images as well as unique photographs, maps, documents, motion picture and audio recordings that are accessible to the public. The Municipal Library contains more than 400,000 unique reports, books, periodicals and documents about New York City government. We are looking for motivated volunteers to help us provide the public with free access to the records of New York City government and expand the resources available to K-12 students and educators who use the collections of the Municipal Archives and Library. By helping us achieve our goals, volunteers will have the opportunity to enhance their own understanding and appreciation of our city’s rich history and resources while contributing to the education and engagement of New York City’s many unique communities. Responsibilities May Include: Creating curriculum aides using primary sources; Conducting research; Language translation of the holdings in the Library and Archives. WomensActivism.NYC is a crowd-sourced, digital archive spearheaded by the NYC Department of Records and Information Services (Municipal Archives) to celebrate the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote in the United States. Position Summary: We are seeking Volunteer Ambassadors for the WomensActivism.NYC project to help collect and write stories about inspiring women, as well as motivate and train others in their network to do so. Candidate must have access to a computer/phone and internet. Volunteers will be trained to gather and write stories and help write women into history. Volunteers will serve remotely. Training will be provided. Requirements Responsibilities: Write (or collect) five stories a week about inspiring women to contribute to the archive; Perform outreach to organizations, groups and individuals to engage them in the WomensActivism.NYC project by making phone calls, sending emails, etc.; Share social media content to promote the WomensActivism.NYC project (on platforms including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and/or Instagram); Perform other duties to support the WomensActivism.NYC project, as assigned Skills: Strong writing skills required; Strong research and organizational skills are helpful; Candidates must be internet proficient and familiar with software applications such as Microsoft Office Suite; Bilingual abilities are a plus.
