Mission Statement

The City Of San Leandro is dedicated to ensuring that vulnerable senior residents of Alameda County have access to sustainable food security. One way of doing so is by partnering with organizations in the area who share similar goals and providing on-site access to execute such goals.

Description

Since 2018, the San Leandro Senior Center has been a proud partner of Elder Care Alliance's Mercy Brown Bag- a grocery distribution program, serving qualified seniors in Alameda County who meet low-income qualifications.

Monthly, San Leandro's partner sites help facilitate over 600 grocery bags of fresh produce, low sodium canned goods; shelf-stable grains and starches such as pasta, rice, lentils and beans; protein sources such as eggs, tofu, frozen meat, and milk.

Senior residents of Alameda County (ages 60+) who need assistance accessing groceries, free of charge, can do so by registering with the Mercy Brown Bag grocery distribution program. Distribution is bi-weekly - 2nd &4th Mondays at the San Leandro Senior Center; and the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays at the Marina Community Center in San Leandro.

Volunteers are needed most with the unloading of bulk items (listed above) and the assembling of bags. However, assistance could also be utilized, in addition to or as an alternative, with line control and distribution once all bags are assembled.
