Mission Statement

Animal Aid Society (AAS) is a 100% volunteer-run and operated no-kill dog shelter. We provide a safe, happy place for dogs to live and thrive until they find their forever homes. If you want a hands-on experience caring for and loving dogs, then Animal Aid is the place for you.

Description

PLEASE VISIT OUR WEBSITE to become a volunteer: https://www.animalaidsociety.org/volunteer/
Animal Aid Society provides food, shelter, and love to abandoned/surrendered dogs. Our dogs come from the Hampton Roads community and from over-crowded municipal shelters. Every dog at Animal Aid receives top-notch veterinary care, quality food, playtime, love, and exercise, and has a large, clean, climate-controlled place to live! As a volunteer, you'll be part of a dedicated team that works together to feed the dogs, clean their runs, and meet the dogs' social, physical, and emotional needs (we're talking walks, playtime, and cuddles here!). Our goal is to find a loving forever home for each dog, and we work hard to find adopters and set them up for success. But, while the dogs wait, we want their stay at the shelter to be as safe, stress-free, and happy as possible. Volunteers like YOU make that possible! Our shelter operates in two shifts per day: AM shift is 9am to noon, and PM shift is 3pm to 6. You'd pick one shift per week (e.g., Saturday AM shift) -- that's it -- just one three hour commitment per week, and you'll make a world of difference in a homeless dog's life!

I absolutely love volunteering here. When you drive in and get out of the car you are immediately greeted with love from the animals. I really think they know my car. They are ALWAYS happy to see you! I work cleaning the air conditioned and heated doggie home and cleaning the run that is attached. Yes that means picking up poop. That blurs quickly as you play, feed, walk, and just visit with them. I was going to volunteer once a week….after two weeks I was up to three! That was a year ago. The people that I work with are awesome. Please come give us a try!

I love volunteering here! Everyone is super friendly and even better, the dogs are THE CUTEST! Being able to help dogs from all different backgrounds is a very rewarding feeling. It doesn’t even feel like volunteer work when you’re snuggling up with a pup :)

Animal Aid Society is a wonderful place to volunteer! It is very rewarding to take care of these wonderful dogs, especially when they finally find their forever home. I have been volunteering here for 1 - 1/2 years. At first I did one shift a week, but I enjoyed it so much I now work 4 shifts a week (I am retired). In general I do not go out in hot weather, but for the dogs I am willing to work in the heat and humidity of the summer (the dogs have a heated/air conditioned part of their run so they are comfortable). The dogs accept you as you are - many of them were abandoned or treated badly and yet they are thrilled to spend time interacting with us. Just sitting and petting a dog is relaxing for both you and the dog.

I have been volunteering at Animal Aid for 17 years. I love working with the pups and the other volunteers are second to none. They love the dogs and care about their fellow volunteers. It is an awesome place to volunteer.

I love volunteering with Animal Aid Society. The time spent working directly with the dogs is so rewarding. Animal Aid Society is a temporary, safe haven for homeless dogs waiting to find their forever, loving homes. This rescue is well run the volunteers are caring and compassionate and the safety and needs of each dog is top priority. Many of the dogs that end up at the shelter have not been treated kindly and having the opportunity to give these dogs love and kindness is a true blessing.

I have worked at AAS for 10 years. I'm a shift leader and am a member of the Adoption Committee. I love being able to get these rescue dogs, who may have had a hard past, into a home. We do not seek out just good homes but we seek out the best homes we can find. These dogs finally get to be a real family member. You should come and see the wonderful changes in a dog who knows no one will hurt him.

I have volunteered at the Animal Aid Society for over 20 years. I started out just walking the dogs but have been to become a shift leader. Animal Aid Society makes you feel like you are part of a family. The work is easy and very rewarding to see how happy the dogs are. the feeling you get when they find their furever home is awesome. I would highly recommend vo;lunteer here - they have morning and night shifts.

I've been volunteering with Animal Aid since 2016, and I love it! If you love dogs, you will, too! When you volunteer with Animal Aid, you spend your time with dogs -- you're actually caring for them, playing with them, and snuggling them. You help keep active puppies busy, help scared dogs become more trusting and confident, and help senior dogs enjoy their golden years! You help dogs get adopted into loving families! Your work here saves lives -- the more volunteers we have, the more dogs we can pull out of bad situations or overcrowded municipal shelters. Our volunteers range in age from 18 to 83!!! There's something for everyone, and you'll have fun doing it.
