Language Assistant Volunteers will be able to provide language support in languages such as Ukrainian, Russian, Swahili, Arabic, Hausa. Language Assistant Volunteers will also assist Introduction to Canadian Education staff deliver orientation activities to newly arrived refugee children and youth ages 6 to end of high school who have not yet attended school in Canada. Program components include school preparedness, orientation to Winnipeg, English language skill development, social recreational activities, addressing common settlement stressors, and computer classes Here are more details: Dates: Sept- June ( Monday to Thursday) Time: 8:30-3:30PM Ages of Clients: 6-21 years of age (school aged children and youth) Volunteer Shifts: Volunteers can volunteer for the full day from 8:30-3:30 PM Volunteers can volunteer in the morning from 8:30-12:30 PM Volunteers can volunteer in the afternoon from 12:00-3:30 PM Location: 251 Notre Dame Ave · Language Assistant Role and Tasks: o Assist in the delivery of individual and group classroom activities o Support with the delivery of our orientation curriculum o Help ensure that all classroom materials and supplies are prepared for each activity o Help with classroom set-up and clean-up o Work directly with newcomer clients to develop supportive and productive relationships o Supervise and aid with preparing participants for entry into the Canadian school system o Communicate client issues with lead staff.

*This is a remote volunteer opportunity, but only accepts volunteer candidates that are residing in the province of Manitoba. Volunteer mentors will remotely assist clients in our Remote After-School Mentorship Program for newcomer and refugee children and youth in Grades 1 through 12. Here are more details: Dates: Sept- June ( Monday to Thursday) Time: 4:00-8:00PM Ages of Clients: Grades 1 - 12 Volunteer Shifts: Volunteers can volunteer from 4:00-6:30 PM Volunteers can volunteer in the morning from 6:00-8:30 PM Volunteers can volunteer in the afternoon from 4:00-8:30 PM Location: Remotely (Microsoft Teams) · Volunteer Mentor Role and Tasks: Provide tutoring support in various subject areas including but not limiting to English, math, science, social studies, health education etc. Assist newcomer and refugee children and youth develop and foster positive relationships with adults in a safe environment Provide support to help develop, practice, and improve English Language Skills Supervise clients during one-on-one meetings and communicate all issues with SWIS staff Volunteer mentors are required to participate in a debrief at the end of their shift Volunteer mentors will be paired with clients and assigned to a breakout room on the video conferencing platform to provide one-on-one and/or small group support based on their preferred subjects and areas they feel comfortable supporting clients with.
