YMCA of the East Bay is looking for adult advisors across the East Bay to help mentor 9th - 12th graders in the Youth & Government program. The program runs from late August - late February, but interested applicants are accepted year round. MODEL LEGISLATURE AND COURT (MLC) is a 6-month, learn-by-doing experience that brings high school students from across the state together to learn the value of democracy. Students have the opportunity to write bills, become attorneys, serve on the State Assembly, and select from more program areas as they participate in this statewide program. The program will include a conference at the state capitol to give delegates the opportunity to put their training into action as they assume their given roles. Legislation is debated and court cases are decided as delegates apply skills they have gained. WHAT DOES AN ADVISOR DO? Advisors mentor and support the youth officers of their delegation. They provide guidance, mentorship, and support to the officers and help cultivate a healthy and welcoming delegation culture. The delegation meets once a week for approximately 2 hours. Previous experience with Youth & Government is NOT required. The Oakland delegation meets once a week for approximately 2 hours. The weekly meeting time has not been set and can accommodate interested applicants.
