Supporting students who are falling behind on reading goals can make a significant impact on their lives and future prospects. We work 1:1 with underserved populations; students who likely do not get help at home. We enter this location at 10:30 and work with 3rd graders. Curriculum is developed for you by the school Reading Specialist. Volunteers pull your 1:1 student from class and work with him/her outside the classroom on easy skills that’ll help them improve in weak areas. Each session lasts about 20 minutes, then you walk the student down the hall and get another individual until the shift ends, at 11:40. At the end of the school year, you've made a statistically-significant impact on school scores and, more importantly, made a child feel empowered and successful! Newsome-Bailey tutoring shifts never exceed two hours. All shifts occur DURING THE SCHOOL DAY (weekdays, generally mornings). You may choose to work 1-5 days per week, either bouncing around to different locations as a sub or sticking with one location. We ask you to commit for the whole school year. We also have locations in Hampton and the East End, NNPS. You’ll be background-checked and trained before you can start. Contact newsomebaileyexecutivedirector@gmail.com or 402-490-0312 to get started MAKING A DIFFERENCE this school year!! THANK YOU!

Students everywhere have fallen behind in school due to Covid Learning Loss. This is especially true in areas already struggling with generational poverty. We go into THESE area schools and work directly with students who are suffering from factors like food insecurity, violence, trauma and illiteracy in the home. In order to have the most impact, we rely on a force of highly-trained volunteer tutors, who do very INTENTIONAL work on skills students need to succeed. If you love teaching, but don't love the record-keeping, behavioral problems and other things taking teachers away from their primary purpose, you'll love working with us! Most of our volunteers are retired teachers and professionals invested heavily in education. We pull students from class for 1:1, 15-20 minute sessions that have maximum impact. You may work daily, every week or several days per week in our HAMPTON LOCATION (23663) and/or in NEWPORT NEWS, VA (23607). Mornings in Newport News. *We are a Christian Non-Profit. *EVERY volunteer undergoes an interview and background check. *Company-wide training before Summer School (JUNE) and every SEPT. Work either/all options EAST END, Newport News: PK and K from 8:30-10 AM, M-F (any or all) Kiln Creek Elementary, NNPS 3rd grade; 10:30-11:40 Hampton City School in 23663 Zipcode Newsome Park School in 23606 Zipcode YOUR 1:1 time serving in this way could be the reason a child learns to read! THAT could be life-changing for a person living in poverty! We start each Fall (OCT) and work until EARLY MAY (when student assessments are compared). Busy during daytime hours? You may also DONATE (we offer 65% VA Tax Credits)! Please tell your retired friends, company, social groups about this opportunity!

Description
The Newsome-Bailey Project is a Christian Nonprofit based out of Newport News, VA. We are committed tutors and volunteers who work together--with the student, family and school system--to equip and empower underserved students to succeed in school and in life. We do all this for FREE. We catch the students who are starting to fall behind in class and work with them 1:1 just outside the classroom, during school hours, to get them caught up. YOU could BE the difference! This is also an opportunity to MENTOR students.
