Volunteer Reading Interventionalist/Tutor-Kiln Creek Elementary (NNPS); 9:20-11:30 AM, M-F (any)

Supporting students who are falling behind on reading goals can make a significant impact on their lives and future prospects. We work 1:1 with underserved populations; students who likely do not get help at home. We enter this location at 9:20 and work with 2nd and 3rd graders. Curriculum is developed for you by the school Reading Specialist. Volunteers will pull our assigned students from class and work with them outside the classroom on easy skills that’ll help them improve in weak areas. Each session lasts about 20-30 minutes, then you get a different student until the shift ends, at 11:30. This is quick, intentional tutoring in 1:1 or small group setting. At the end of the school year, you've made a statistically-significant impact on school scores and, more importantly, made a child feel empowered and successful! Newsome-Bailey tutoring shifts never exceed two hours. All shifts occur DURING THE SCHOOL DAY (weekdays, generally mornings). You may choose to work 1-5 days per week, either bouncing around to different locations as a sub, or sticking with one location. We ask you to commit for the whole school year. We also have locations in the East End, NNPS. You’ll be background-checked and trained before you can start. In-School Student Tutoring in Newsome Park Neighborhood

Students everywhere have fallen behind in school due to Covid Learning Loss. This is especially true in areas already struggling with generational poverty. We go into THESE area schools and work directly with students who are suffering from factors like food insecurity, violence, trauma and illiteracy in the home. In order to have the most impact, we rely on a force of highly-trained volunteer tutors, who do very INTENTIONAL work on skills students need to succeed. If you love teaching, but don't love the record-keeping, behavioral problems and other things taking teachers away from their primary purpose, you'll love working with us! Most of our volunteers are retired teachers and professionals invested heavily in education. We pull students from class for 1:1, 15-20 minute sessions that have maximum impact. You may work daily, every week or several days per week in our NEWPORT NEWS, VA (23607) locations. Marshall ELC with Kindergarteners: 8-10:30 AM, M-F (any or all) Newsome Park Elementary with 2nd/3rd: 9:30-11:15A; (Tu/Th) *We are a Christian Non-Profit. *EVERY volunteer undergoes an interview and background check. *Company-wide training on site, and every SEPT. Other Tutoring Options: Kiln Creek Elementary, NNPS 2nd/3rd grade; 9:20-11:30 YOUR 1:1 time serving in this way could be the reason a child learns to read! The Newsome-Bailey Project is a Christian Nonprofit based out of Newport News, VA. We are committed tutors and volunteers who work together--with the student, family and school system--to equip and empower underserved students to succeed in school and in life. We do all this for FREE. We catch the students who are starting to fall behind in class and work with them 1:1 just outside the classroom, during school hours, to get them caught up. YOU could BE the difference! This is also an opportunity to MENTOR students.
