Mission Statement
WAVO’s mission is simply to improve the lives of West Africans, primarily those living in poverty. Our specific efforts center around: * Fundraising to fulfill individual basic needs (housing, food, education, clothing), especially for children and young adults * Providing opportunities for international volunteers to visit and provide direct support to West African communities * Working with local nonprofits to provide assistance and to create self-sustaining organizations * To expand and redefine our program and its impact from time to time as necessary to meet the challenges of supporting West African people
Description
Greg and Rory met in 2006, each on their first visit to Ghana. They volunteered with the Ultimate Volunteer Organisation, working with UVO leaders (Eric and Christian) to raise donations, provide physical goods to the program, and find other volunteers. Since first working with UVO they have raised tens of thousands of dollars for the project and have helped find over 50 volunteers to visit. They both maintain regular contact with Eric and Christian, whose continual dedication and sacrifice to the well-being of local children is inspiring.
WAVO was formed in 2018 to continue and expand these efforts. WAVO still maintains a great relationship and regular contact with Eric & Christian from UVO, and are working on ways to sustain, support, and further grow the programs. Many of the young children from the 2006 visit are now adults who have graduated from college and are still involved in supporting the next generation of children themselves.
