The Vigil Volunteer offers companionship, comfort and presence to patients during the time immediately prior to their death. Support can be provided to patients who have no family to be with them or to provide support and guidance to families and caregivers, helping to relieve the unknown; this may also include staff if the patient resides at a facility. Support is provided in a variety of ways, including being a calm presence, talking and listening to the family/ caregivers, or sharing silence.

Every day, Heartland Hospice has the distinct honor of providing care to U.S. Military Veterans and their families by a special team of caregivers which includes volunteers. Veteran Hospice Volunteers are important to us as veterans share a common language which builds trust and facilitates compassionate care to our Veteran clients. VETS-TO-VETS- No one understands questions and concerns of U.S. Military Veterans more than a fellow veteran or active-duty personnel. Hospice is a special kind of care designed to provide comfort care as well as spiritual and emotional support for terminally ill patients and their families. It neither hastens nor postpones death: rather it affirms life and acknowledges dying as a normal process. Veteran volunteers provide a supportive presence to our veteran clients by providing friendly visits which may include sharing stories, listening, reading, taking walks, running errands, respite to family members and other client interests. As a volunteer you can donate as much or as little of your time as desired. To find out more about our program, please call 715 214 2485. Our service area includes Barron, Chippewa, Clark, Dunn, Eau Claire and Trempealeau Counties.
