Mission Statement

The mission of the Brazos Valley Literacy Coalition (BVLC) is four-fold: To help functionally illiterate adults learn to read. To help adults learn English so that they can understand medical professionals, talk with their child’s teacher, and keep safe in the workplace. To support parents of school-aged children so that their children can advance in reading achievement. To train caregivers and parents of young children (ages 0-5) in research-based methods that foster early literacy skills.

Description

THE TRAGEDY OF ILLITERACY: In Texas 1 in 5 adults cannot read well enough to read a newspaper, read prescription directions, or apply for a job. This affects their children, the local workforce, and their general quality of life. Brazos Valley Literacy Coalition provides free ESL classes with trained volunteer teachers and also helps adults who are illiterate learn to read by pairing them with trained mentors.
