Mission Statement

The Youth Garden Project cultivates healthy children, families, and community through educational programs and connecting people with food from seed to table.

Description

The Youth Garden Project began in 1996 as an opportunity for youth with court-ordered community service hours to complete their hours in an educational and nurturing environment. Founded by Sarah Heffron, the garden was in her backyard and served about a dozen youth in its first year.

Thanks to our partnerships and dedicated supporters, YGP has "grown" so much since we were founded! Today the Youth Garden Project sits on one and a half acres of land next to Grand County High School, serves around 1,000 youth each year across all age groups though educational programming and volunteerism, and grows over 7,000 pounds of produce each season with over 20% of that produce donated.

In 2021, 273 volunteers spent time in the garden helping to grow local, sustainable food. Whether it's a regular commitment, a one time event, a service group, or any other level of involvement, we welcome community members and visitors of all ages to get involved at YGP and help us further our mission of growing healthy food, kids, and community.
