Illness changes us. Having help on the journey can be a powerful tool. Spiritual Care Companions are volunteers who, under the direction of the Hospital or Hospice Chaplain, provide compassion, active listening and kindness to our patients, families, friends and staff allowing them time to process matters of the heart, mind, soul and spirit. Spiritual Care companions look to bring hope, purpose, meaning and connectedness to the bedside of the people we serve each and everyday. As a Spiritual Care Companion you must be open to the many cultural, spiritual, faith and non-faith based and/or religious values we all hold. Your role on the spiritual care team team is to walk "alongside" someone in need of encouragement, a good listening ear, prayer, and/or reassurance. Your tools could be reading from sacred texts, life experiences, an interest in various spiritualities and practices, CPE training and more. Whether you wish to serve in the hospital or on our hospice team we are looking for volunteers who will join us in making a difference! Come help us support our patients and families right where they are at. To learn more about becoming a Spiritual Care volunteer call 860-585-3431 or email Chaplain Karen Hale at khale@bristolhospital.org

We wonder if you are one who has good people skills and is willing use these to benefit hospice patients. If that’s you, please continue to read. BHHC is looking for adults who like helping others by being an attentive listener, a person who easily engages with others and meets them "where they’re at," knows when to remain silent and is comfortably able to "just be" with another. Previous personal experience as a family member of a hospice patient is not required, yet is often what brings successful and excellent volunteers to choose this invaluable role of Hospice Volunteer. Frequently, creative, out-of-the box thinkers (and intuitives) are successful in this volunteer role. Some volunteers know that this specialty form of volunteering, hospice volunteering , needs to be part of their commitment to their community. Hospice volunteers come with a breadth of lived experiences, interests, and skills and are willing to use these unique parts of themselves in helping hospice patients and their family. Currently, useful and needed abilities include: can effectively communicate in a language in addition to English; has a healthy sense of humor, a keen interest in sports, is a veteran, loves gardening, appreciates the arts in many forms, rides or has ridden motorcycles, is a talented repairperson. The value is that all of these abilities do not need to be found in one human. All are needed and whatever you bring, that’s perfectly enough! Patient Care Volunteers offer patients companionship, a calming presence and conversation with patients and families. Complementary Therapy Volunteers (who are licensed or certified in their specific area) provide REIKI or Massage. Administrative Care Volunteers help with mailings, filing, or special projects during office hours (8:00 - 4:30). For more information about our program or to secure an application please visit our website at: https://www.bristolhealth.org/Why-Bristol-Health/Careers/Volunteer or email us @ volunteerteam@bristolhospital.org Looking forward to hearing from you!
