Volunteers play a vital role that enables the hospice to meet the needs of the community more fully. Administrative Volunteers work primarily in the Murfreesboro office and offering outreach activity support throughout Cannon, Rutherford and Wilson counties. WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN VOLUNTEERING WITH CARIS HEALTHCARE: Flexible times that fit your schedule Learn about the Hospice Philosophy Use your skills in a productive way while learning new skills, too Find purpose & connect with your community Training and on-going support Education on the Bereavement Process Support from Hospice Team & Volunteer Coordinator Easy Timekeeping Process Credit for TN Promise or Community Service Some examples of how our Administrative Volunteers MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Assist with light office duties like; data entry, filing, mailings & photocopying Reception tasks; answering phone calls and faxing Preparing supplies for our nurses and aides to take to patients. (We DO NOT keep any pharmaceutical medicines in our office) Decorate the office for holidays Update bulletin boards Make Bereavement calls to caregivers; after being properly trained Assist with projects, special events and Memorial Services Help in the community at Senior Centers with Bingo, Hospice Helpers and decorate for events etc. Attend Vet to Vet Talks. DONATE YOUR TIME & TALENT BEING CREATIVE & USING YOUR SKILLS TO KEEP FAMILIES CONNECTED Our office covers: Cannon, Rutherford & Wilson counties. In a legacy project, a hospice volunteer helps a patient craft something meaningful and memorable through crafts, music, art, writing or other creative processes. The completed item serves as a reminder of the person, what they loved, and what was important to them. No matter what form legacy takes, be assured it will be a timeless extension of oneself, that a family and friends will cherish forever. Examples of how you can create a legacy project WITH the patient: Assist in writing or write down a first-person account of the most significant events and lessons learned during their lives. Help finish a good-bye letter to their families and friends Take picture of the patient and their loved ones Recording of a special song that incorporates the sound of the patient’s heartbeat Videotape a patient sharing stories they want to pass down. This will capture their mannerisms and voice so the family can always have a record of their loved one Assist in completing an "unfinished project" to pass along for others to cherish Writing a letter or buying a gift for someone to open at a future life event like a graduation, birthday or wedding. Collect fingerprints or hand print in plaster plaque Examples of how you can create a legacy project for the families: Make special legacy gift from a loved ones clothes for a family member. Ex. teddy bear, ornament or pillow out of a favorite shirt or sweater. Put together a scrapbook or photo album for others to enjoy Create a picture slide show Design a collage of decorative jewelry as a piece of art Compile a binder, book or box of a patient's favorite recipes Make a shadow box for a patient's favorite collectibles Build a frame to display a treasured painting Create a quilt from favorite clothing or fabric items Compile a collection of favorite songs or hymns Plant a tree or re-plant cuttings of the patient's loved plants to distribute to loved ones Organize a collection of paintings or artwork for the family Write a poem about the loved one from stories they share or your time visiting with the patient ____________________________________________________________________ Snapshot overview of the process of making a legacy project: Meet/Speak with Volunteer Coordinator, go over options and requested pending projects Meet w family, if needed Be presented with the overall project vision or idea, discuss what your thoughts & capabilities are to execute the project Receive the patient's items and any available supplies There is no funding available from CARIS. We can work together to resource supplies and families may pay for items needed. However, your time and talent are donated. Agree on timeline and completion of project. Animal therapy -is the use of an animal to provide comfort, emotional support, and therapeutic care to people with a variety of health challenges in different situations. It is often used for mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, grief, and post-traumatic stress disorder, but can also be used for physical conditions and the emotional component of physical disease. Most therapy animals are dogs, but cats, horses, rabbits, and any species can be used as long as they are well-trained and fulfill the requirements. Eligibility depends on the care setting and the condition of the person to receive the therapy. Animal therapy has many favorable outcomes, including relaxation, talk therapy breakthroughs, relief of symptoms, and overall improved well-being. REQUIREMENTS FOR HANDLER: Volunteer Application and Background Consent Form Background Check TB Test Series (CARIS covers the cost) performed at Concentra Orientation, average 2 hours Cornerstone Training- Online training videos and resources Valid Driver's License Current Automobile Insurance Each assignment has their own rules and regulations on COVID protocol All volunteers must follow the rules and regulations at the assignment Volunteer dog handlers are required to submit appropriate documentation and are required to use the appropriate visit code on their time sheet. Volunteer handlers are required to wear their identification badge and comply with the dress code. The volunteer handler and dog must have successfully completed an evaluation and training course that meets the requirements of an appropriate accrediting agency. Documentation of successful completion must be provided to the Director of Volunteer Services and filed in their record.. All costs for pet health care, including the initial exam, will be the sole responsibility of the owner/ pet handler. The dog shall be under the direct and continuous supervision and control of the volunteer handler at all times. The consent form shall be filed in the patients' medical record. REQUIREMENTS FOR DOGS: DEFINITIONS: A therapy dog, is a dog who has been certified to be medically fit and has been trained and certified by an appropriate accrediting agency. ( i.e., Therapy Dogs International; Good Dog Foundation, etc.). *We are open to other animals. Pets which are certified to be medically fit and are trained and certified by an appropriate accrediting agency, ( i.e.., Therapy Dogs International, etc...) shall be allowed to visit selected patients. Animal must be a minimum of one-year old to visit. Non-spayed dogs are not allowed to visit when in heat. Animals must be certified by their own veterinarian to being in good health, including good dental health. There should be no evidence of fleas, mites, ticks, diarrhea, vomiting, Oculo-nasal discharge, skin lesions, dermatitis or ringworm. If an animal requires treatment for an illness by its veterinarian in between visits, a note must be obtained from the veterinarian stating the animal is healthy and cleared to resume therapy visits. Any animal that has had sarcoptic mange within the last six months must have one documented negative scraping. All vaccinations, including Rabies, Distemper, Hepatitis (Adenovirus), Parvovirus must be current. (Leptospirosis and Parainfluenza at the discretion of the Veterinarian). Proof of vaccination must be submitted on an annual basis. A ten-day period must have elapsed between the most recent vaccination and pet visit. Documentation will be filed in the Human Resource Department. Prior to the start of each therapy visit, the handler will check the animal for signs and symptoms of health problems. The volunteer handler will document the animal's health status on the volunteer visit report. * If health problems are suspected, the volunteer must call to inform the volunteer department; Animals shall be prohibited from visiting until cleared by the animal’s veterinarian. The animal handler must notify the Director of Volunteer Services of any communicable diseases or illness diagnosed in the animal. The Volunteer Department notifies the Vice President of Patient Services of any infections diagnosed in the animal for the purpose of infection control tracking. The animal must be bathed and well groomed. Animal shall be walked by their handlers for the purpose of emptying their systems prior to entry into the patient's home and or any Hospice Inc. office sites. The owner is responsible for disposing of the animal waste or clean up needs. The animal’s fur and paws must be wiped by the handler prior to entering the patient's home or facility, if soiled or muddy. All animals are required to wear a badge to indicate participation within the pet therapy program. The handlers shall be responsible for the provision of pet supplies and treats. Special Projects Volunteer: Our Special Projects Volunteers can offer support in a variety of ways: baking, creating crafts or cards for special occasions, knitting or crocheting lap blankets, providing musical entertainment, or assisting staff with errands, fundraising and outreach events. The sky is the limit, and we are open to hearing new ideas. Here's some examples: Crocheting, Knitting or sewing a Lap Blanket Making Fidget sleeves or blankets Painting inspirational rocks Coloring sheets of animals, flowers, or seasonal messages etc. Making stress relief balls Creating Floral Birthday Cakes Alter adult clothing by adding slits or snaps, to making dressing easier Make neck pillows, rice heating pads, etc. Bake cookies or favorite items Create aromatherapy containers Make stuffed animals or dolls for our patients to enjoy We look for items can: Comfort dementia, Alzheimer's or agitated patients Honor our Veteran Patients Aid in dressing Provide comfort while resting in bed or chair Help keep patients warm and secure Brighten patients room Make someone's day Be mindful and lower stress & anxiety ___________________________ ________________________________________ If you are not interacting with a patient, then the only requirements are: Contact name Telephone number E-mail address ____________________________________________________________________
