Mission Statement
Greenville Literacy Association’s mission is to enrich our community by increasing the literacy and employability of our citizens. GLA is a not for profit, charitable organization educating and empowering the adult community since 1965. GLA offers GED, ESL, Civics, Citizenship, Job Readiness and Literacy classes both in the morning and evening to accommodate our working community. It is thanks to our Tutors, Teachers and Leaders that we bring our mission to fruition.
Description
GLA offers English as a Second Language Virtual classes to immigrant adults looking to learn or improve their English skills. The ESL classes are offered virtually in the morning and evening to meet the needs of our working adults. ESL classes meet via Skype, Zoom and other platforms. ESL classes are 1 hour long and are geared toward basic, intermediate and advanced ESL classes. Tutors teach grammar, pronunciation, conversation, civics, lifeskills, citizenship, idioms and job readiness among many others as our Tutors' backgrounds and expertise are both broad and vast (i.e. retired nurses teaching health and ESL, nutrition etc.) Our tutors teach in the target language which means you don't have to speak another language. Tutors have enjoyed and returned semester after semester and have stated how gratifying the experience has been, giving them purpose, connections and hope during these uncertain times. Our agency operates in S.C. which is e.s.t. but we have successfully recruited and placed volunteers from WA, CA, UT, AZ as well as from overseas, widening our net and providing us with flexibility to meet our students' needs. Do you speak English? Did you finish high school or college? Do you like meeting people from diverse backgrounds? Do you enjoy helping and empowering others? The commitment is once or twice a week for 1 hour of class (for example T/TH 10 to 11 am or Wednesday from 6 to 7pm). We run by semesters: Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. And ever since the pandemic hit in March 2020, we have never stopped teaching Virtually! Join us.
