Description

Minds Matter of Portland, chartered in 2006, is a three-year mentoring program that begins in students’ sophomore year of high school. We offer a combination of individualized mentor support and group tutoring that provides these high-achieving young with the resources, information and guidance they need to gain admission to, enroll in and graduate from four-year colleges. Since our start, 100% of our students have accepted to a four-year college or university.

Each year Minds Matter of Portland serves 54+ students with the help of over 100 mentors, and a volunteer staff of 37 focused on curriculum, administration, logistics, and fundraising.

As a mentor, you will be paired with a Minds Matter student and a co-mentor, both of with whom you will meet with weekly at the Minds Matter Saturday sessions throughout the school year. To apply, please visit: https://www.mindsmatterportland.org/volunteers.html

I have been a mentor to two wonderful young women and it has been on of the most rewarding adventures I have ever undertaken. I started with both when they were sophomores and helped them navigate though both the complexities of the college application and financial aid process as well as helping with general preparedness for college life. I must admit that I think I learned more from them than they did from me, and I am so proud of the women they have become and can't wait to see how they will change the world. I plan to keep in touch with them through college and beyond. What I like about this organization is that it truly strives to put the student first. We are all there to help these incredible kids get the opportunities they deserve, and show them that they can reach their dreams. I am humbled to have had a little part in the success of two students so far and look forward to helping more in the future.
